ATIP has now published the following report:

ATIP03.004: Indian Chip Design Activities

ABSTRACT: India has recently emerged as a significant player in silicon
design, with local companies improving their capabilities and expertise in
silicon design by watching and learning from multinationals. These local
Indian companies have been moving up the value chain much more rapidly
than India's software industry. In Bangalore itself, about fifty companies
are working on various aspects of ASIC (Application Specific Integrated
Circuit) and FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) design as well as board
design. Some of these domestic firms have the largest team of silicon
designers in the world outside of the internal development centers of
multinationals' chip vendors. The present report summarizes India's
current chip design activities and provides an assessment of India's
future activities in this particular sector. The report also provides a
representative list of Indian companies engaged in chip design advanced
development.
