In sharp contrast to the Trump administration?s calls for Christian prayers
for the war effort, Pope Leo XIV says military domination is ?entirely
foreign to the way of Jesus Christ.?

Pete Hegseth, the U.S. defense secretary, has asked the American peopl
<https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/20/us/politics/hegseth-christianity-military.html>e
to pray
<https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/20/us/politics/hegseth-christianity-military.html>
?every day, on bended knee? for a military victory in the Middle East ?in
the name of Jesus Christ.?

Pope Leo XIV, the first U.S.-born pontiff, has a starkly different take on
what should be done in Jesus?s name.

In a homily
<https://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/bollettino/pubblico/2026/04/02/260402a.html?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email>
during a Mass on Thursday morning before Easter, the pope said that the
Christian mission has often been ?distorted by a desire for domination,
entirely foreign to the way of Jesus Christ.?

Since the United States and Israel began bombing Iran in late February, the
pope has consistently called for an end to the violence and a return to
dialogue to resolve the conflict. But without naming Mr. Hegseth, he has
also pointed out the ways in which Christianity has been marshaled for
purposes that the pope says do not align with Catholic teaching.

?We tend to consider ourselves powerful when we dominate, victorious when
we destroy our equals, great when we are feared,? the pope said in a homily
during a Holy Thursday rite
<https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/02/world/europe/pope-leo-wash-feet-holy-thursday.html>
at the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the cathedral of the bishop of Rome.
?God has given us an example ? not of how to dominate, but of how to
liberate; not of how to destroy life, but of how to give it.?

In late March the pope warned against invoking the name of Jesus
<https://www.vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/en/homilies/2026/documents/20260329-palme.html>
for battle, saying in a Sunday homily that Jesus ?does not listen to the
prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them.?

Throughout his first year as pontiff, Leo has been careful not to wade into
U.S. politics and has avoided direct confrontation with the White House.

He has used his influence through proxies, such as when he encouraged U.S.
bishops to strongly support immigrants
<https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/08/us/pope-leo-immigration-trump.html> last
year as President Trump escalated his deportation campaign.

He has mentioned Mr. Trump only when asked directly by a reporter if he had
a message for the U.S. president.

?I?m told that President Trump recently stated that he would like to end
the war,? the pope said outside his country residence in Castel Gandolfo
outside Rome on March 31. ?Hopefully he?s looking for a way to, to decrease
the amount of violence, of bombing.?

Pope Leo has said he has not spoken directly to Mr. Trump about the war.
But he talked Friday morning by telephone with Isaac Herzog, president of
Israel, and reiterated the importance of dialogue and ending the conflicts
to secure a ?just and lasting peace? in the Middle East, according to a
Vatican statement.

Fr Jose Antonio Da Costa the visionary Past PP. bequeathed his legacy
A dynamic, precious multifaceted diamond , talented,Sports
person,composer ,playwrite
Poet and CD producer all rolled into one pack
He needs no dead plaques to recall his presence nor immortalise him.His
works speak louder than platitudes
His footprints are etched in the hearts and minds of grateful
Parishioners of Vasco, Navelim likewise in letters of Gold to be
treasured for posterity
The one and only Ex PP in the history of Chinchinim Parisg , who will
forever be alive in our midst and consciousness because of our Village
innumerable benefits
He has very faitfully ,piously continued, enhanced his spiritual
traditions, but also mighty physical developments both inside the Church
and surroundings These achievements are unprecedented for an single
individual priest during his tennure .The only annoying , repeated fact
"I" adnauseam was identity weakness. But it does not take away his
determined visionary acts that are part of our legacy
The regrettable fact is willfully denying at least a religious farewell,
which speaks very poorly of the organisations of the church, including his
companions , some of whom he exhalted to popular but undeserving heights
of social levels
During his last year due to accident whe nursed a failing memory but he did
not burry anyone instead celebratinghis marriage.Simply stated his
temporary loss of memory did not exclude him of his responsibilities .
Capitalising on minor faults to the exclusion of his towering , greatest
achievement is mischievous intentions to demote his stature of services on
purpose of jealousy envy or personal hurts or axe to grind
"NO ONE CAN EVER SHINE BRIGHTER BY PUTTING OUT THE LIGHT OF OTHER "
Even though there was no traditional reaching him on teansfer by
Parishioners but small group made up the moment of gratitude. It is
pertinent to note ,that his private gifts and offerings far exceeded the
formal expectations ,including by those who orchestrated open dissent
publicly In fact were the lavish donors
It reflects very poorly of Parihioners, who became silent spectators of
open murder of civility, ignoring , age old traditions of gratitude to all
those who served our Parish. My own inquiries revealed no special reasons
,but still remained shrouded in mystery in hushed voices of ignorance
and deviations ,untenable
His first act was providing air-conditioners in all rooms
English Mass was established immediately by decorating stage ,providing
chairs, English hymn books etc It was a popular demand kept in hibernation
due to which Parishioners were migrating to Margao and Navelim. Not only
did this gesture stop outward flow, but accentuated inward flow of many
Parishionersfrom AVC ,happily participated and were drawn to our Parish
for religious ceremonies. The acknowledgement even in Divtti along with
subsequent transfers of APP added insult to injury and thus appeared to
be little to late for appeasement. Now lavish use to glorify incubants
in coloured pages , unmindful of financial impropriety.
,
A popular , well organised mass retreat ,served to fill the vaccuum and
thirst for spiritual awakening. The novelty concept of providing double
fans needs no emphasis .Sound system made listening pleasure and audible
for effective participation . The decorative Chandeliers added to
lightening effect.
The building of monumental college premises ,a task so gigantic in its
perception is a proud gift of reality,a lasting monument to his glory
He conceived of raising astronimical funds in novel ways and succeeded
,even personally in all humility visiting other churches with a group.
Besides the surroundings of the college, enhanced its importance built at
a cost The Walls were decorated so beautifully at Christmass and new year
,it was an opportunity to budding artist to show case their talents adding
new dimensions to surroundings, a welcome act for the first time. Getting
the Science section could singularly be achieved alone due to his personal
standing, influence and popularity in an atmosphere of fierce ,legitimate
objections by surrounding institutions not excluding DSE to some extent
The stand at Cemetry serves a meaningful purpose elegantly wishing by
mourners .The renovation of cemetry decorated with granite walls is a mark
of his vision , no mean task financially. The crumbling roof infested with
white ants remedied effectively.
The ground outside the Church took tonnes of filling mud.The ground is
leveled for extra parking and part is paved too .His plans to make it a
recreational evening square with music remained a dream
He walled the
area outside cemetry to enhance future space for cemetry accommodation.
He did attempt new constructions of remaining graves. The Installation of
high mast around the cemetry provides lights dispelling fears of ghosts
and spirits and also provides protection ,security to the isolated
College Campus
The novel and attractive statue of Fr Vaz is an aesthetic sight to
behold in all its conception and grandeur .
The open space near post office was enclosed by wall to prevent
encroachments and remains prime valuable asset for the church in future
in an around prominent location
The crumbling Mother Theresa structure was reformed at a cost to stand in
its past glory.
All the past traditions, customs social and spiritual received his undivided
attention and he was never found diverting ,ignoring or decreasing in
meaningful values , but rather enhanced made more popular, aceptable and
thus significant adding new dimensions to old forms
Even in advancing age at odd times he was readily avaiable and willing to
offer religious services without excuses
P.C.Trust felicitated him in the presence of Mr Churchill Alemao .The
PCTrust sports magazine is dedicated in his honour with write up and poem
too .Trust publicly celebrated his last birthday, for the first time ,
at a small gathering of invited friends.
At the function the launch of award in his memory was announced with the
first donation of Rs 50000, on the day . Presently the awards fund of Rs
5OK each for First students of SMA and MMHS Besides Rs 100K for
First Student at Std XII Science at MMHSS
Besides Rs 100K for the Topper at SSC from amongst DSE schools of
Chinchinim , Vasco and Navelim . I may not be wrong to state that such
honours and recognitions of this magnitude remains unique and rare
gesture, thus far and possibly beyond .No Past PP of our Lady of Hope
has received such an expression of public gratitude. The awards are
contributions from the Parishioners with love and affections
Written folders, labels stickers poems etc are presented to him for his
perusal and pleasure .I have not used any past printed material
deliberately on purpose , so any ommmisions are purely unintentional.
I had no personal contact with him anytime during his tenure at Chinchinim.
It was purely informal touch and go relations as a Parishioner.I was in
touch with him to donate Baptistry to the church as per his design
,specifics or material etc at any input costs but declined to offer the
money or costs as the committed refused such a proposal he said
I was personally requested to once again to record his achievements for
his presence servives at the Chinchinim Parish. It was indeed a great
pleasure to recall from memory his legacy , his identity as the dynamic
Vissionary ExPP , one who will never be forgotten and continue to remind
us with his works both physical and spiritual
Fr Jose Antonio admired and affectionately remembered for times to come
