*Roadside Trees Need Scientific Planning*

Roadside trees once served an important purpose. When people travelled
mostly on foot, they provided welcome shade from the scorching sun and
shelter during heavy rains. Today, however, with the enormous increase in
vehicular traffic, the situation has changed.

During storms and the monsoon, ageing or diseased trees and falling
branches have caused fatalities, blocked roads, damaged vehicles and
disrupted power supply by snapping overhead electricity lines. Many trees
were planted decades ago to mark property boundaries or under social
forestry programmes without considering future traffic density or their
mature size.

The answer is not indiscriminate felling of trees. They are vital for the
environment. However, public safety must receive equal importance.
Hazardous trees should be identified through periodic inspections,
professionally pruned where necessary, and replaced with suitable species
that are less likely to endanger road users or damage infrastructure.

Tall coconut trees within school compounds and other public places also
require regular maintenance to prevent accidents from falling coconuts or
fronds. People should also avoid taking shelter beneath trees during
lightning storms.

A scientific approach to roadside tree management can protect both the
environment and human life. Development and conservation must go hand in
hand.
