i am of the opinion that is would be wrong to sign anything on this
issue which refers to an anti-hijab law. the law is an "anti-outward
manifestations of one's religious beliefs" law, it is not opposed to
just hijab.

to approach it in this way just further exacerbates the... ermmm... what
i would call anti-islamic stance that muslim rights matter more to
muslims than other people's rights do and that is what they should focus
on. that is not my understanding of islam. i thought i was
understanding correctly that a muslim would speak up for a christian,
jew, muslim, or even... a zoroastrian or a mouse atheist :p if their
rights were being violated and they were being oppressed.

to me, this is an opportunity for muslims to express islamic sentiments
about rights: no one can be treated unfairly within islam, since
justice and equality are not limited to muslims, according to islam. i
consider the language attached to this petition to be divisive, and i
would not sign something titled in that way. that law is not "about"
hijab.

(there are lots of things i won't do or go along with because i think
they have taints in them that lead to more harm, and i do try to speak
up about them as often as i can, but there are also lots of things i
just go about my business in avoiding without speaking out loudly
enough. for example, there's a mission statement out at z that i'm not
going to sign because i think it asks for support of some flawed
concepts -- but no, i didn't let them know, i just didn't sign it.)

p.s. i've been spending more time out at muslim wake up, hope to see
more people from this list there. am still catching up on mwu articles,
since i missed a month or more of activity back in the summer. there's
a discussion board there, and ... ermm... we could use more serious
discussion topics, and discuss-ers... hint hint.. ;)
