salam, there is enough historical 'proof' to show *hijab* (in this case, head-scarf) predates islam amongst the arabs. nevertheless, hijab makes sense for muslim women in developing countries. i hardly think a muslim woman in the west needs worry about hijab... when men concentrate on women like pamela lee :) i think the idea is modesty, whatever culture you are in. of course, not to say "when in rome...
