RE: Women Fights for Equality in W.VA Mosque

Salaam and good morning Na'eem!  :)

I heard Manji do an interview with NPR here in Michigan last weekend and it 
was quite a provocative discussion . . . she has quite a history to boot! 
She mentioned that through all the trials and tribulations that she was 
hanging on to her faith by a thread.

I's that kind of struggle that makes it where I can see a link between the 
marginalization of Nomani (whom I only know as well as you), Manji (whom 
I've only read about and listened to) and myself. THAT'S why I mentioned 
her!

I'm looking forward to reading her book (w/your and others criticism in 
mind).

I'm also looking forward to reading the Safi-edited "Progressive Muslims". 
Just picked it up last night at the 'biblioteque' (library!). I see that it 
covers race, class, and sexuality . . . all issues have gotten in the way I 
think as I've tried to participate in the Islamic community while I was in 
school. (That's two reasons why I joined this group - to have SOME 
semblance of Islamic community and to keep from rejecting the faith all 
together.)

I hope that clarifies the implicit parallel I drew and I totally understand 
of others don't see or appreciate that kind of a link. In fact, I apologize 
if anyone found it baseless or even offensive though I do reserve the right 
to see it as an inspiring series of connected events/information.

I'd love to hear more about what you and others thought of Manji (though I 
think we already covered that topic in the fall if I'm not mistaken), 
Nomani (especially as more details arise), and the implicit parallel I drew.
