salam,

as a queer muslim who prayed next to countless beautiful muslim men throughout the years, i can tell you that in the masjid the last thing one thinks about is sex. salaat is very personal attempt to connect with the divine... and while that 'link' (salah) is going on, all things worldly (including sex) are millions of miles away :) if not, one has more things to worry about than fitnah hehe

so no... the separation has very little to do with staying away from 'fitnah.' IF that was the case, there would have been two equal entrances to the masjids, not one decorated on the front and one garbage door... way in the back.
