Re: on original sin

Salaam Afdhere,

I know that there have historically been a number of different
interpretations of original sin within Catholicism and Christianity as
a whole. The reason I laughed at your statement originally was that,
having been raised Catholic, the idea that Christianity was a different
religion from Catholicism struck me as funny -- all Catholics consider
themselves to be Christians, although it's true that some Protestants
don't think they are. What I said initially was what I was taught as a
Catholic child.

the way it's understood in catholicism is from st. augustine (d. 430
AD.) before that and after that, there were christians who believed the
original sin in a quite different way. in christian sense, children are
not full of sin. and many churches the baptism doesn't take place until
the person is mature. and some of the churches reject baptism
rites altogether.

of course, catholicism is
different from christianity. i know to non-christians, it the same

But seriously, I think I have to agree with Laura et al on this. The
concept of original sin descending upon the children is quite different
from people having the capacity to sin and each being responsible for
his or her own sins.

Salaam,

No, Christians (at least Catholics) believe that children are born with
original sin that is cleansed through baptism. After that, a child
cannot sin until they reach 7 years old. An unbaptized child, in
Catholic theology, does not go to heaven, but rather to limbo, because
of original sin. This is quite different from Islam, I think.

heaven. and when they reach the age to tell the difference in the
world, if they disbelieve in christ, then they live with the original
sin. tell me the difference between that and the islamic view of the
verses 2:38-39... where if you disbelieve in god's guidance when you
reach that age, you face the eternal punishment for the
original sin (i.e, what brings 2:38-39 in the first place) ? no
difference at all, right?
