or perhaps some of us know our history a little too well? you might not know this but there a few qur'anic versions out there. and there were even a few more... before khalif 3uthman burned the rest. why? well, i don't know... why not ask tabari :) so, like you were wondering to yameen... perhaps those "itsy-bit little tiny" mentions were in the other versions? to be honest, i really don't care. i don't look at the qur'an as my *guide* to everything but rather... as my dhikr/rememberance of allah.

yes, the qur'an has full of pretty outdated thingies to many of us. no, it is not outdated to my somali relatives and my arab brothers and sisters in the desert. said enough? :) but then again... i wouldn't try to explain to them about paternity tests or the fact that my sisters in the west need not "cover" as *whacked* men now have women like ... say ... pamela lee ... to
look at all they want :)

being muslim is not 'cultural.' islam is a faith. as a muslim, one believes in the oneness of god and submits to that. the rest (including muhammad, the qur'an, the hadiths, the salat, etc etc etc) are details that come after that fact.

as for becoming sexually promoscuos, isn't there anything between exposing oneself to diseases and being married? how about trying the way of prophet sulaiman and that cute queen sheba? you know... being totally in love, monogomous, having children together without even marrying :)

i have a lesbian muslim friend couple who live in canada (one of them writes a colum for the arabic version of the magazine i edit, though we translate her column for the online english version.) they have been together -- oh give and take -- thirty years. they have three children together. yet - oh gasp! - they never "married." must've been livin' in sin.
