I believe those male servants may have been castrati.  Wasn't it a custom to
have boys castrated at a somewhat young age so that they would become
servants and later guardians of wives?

This is only based on a book I read of a member of the royal family in Saudi
Arabia who described at length one such servant living on her grounds.
