Thanks for the info Laura.  That's definitely a possibility.  One that seems
more consistent with the rest of the koran.

As to not altering Gods creation, I think you may be referring to this line
[30.30] Then set your face upright for religion in the right state-- the
nature made by Allah in which He has made men; there is no altering of
Allah's creation; that is the right religion, but most people do not know--

As I said, I don't know arabic, but when I first read this, it seems God is
saying not to alter the religion.  Gods creation is the religion of Islam in
this context.
