salaam sofia, charity firstly, very few people in South Africa has heard of Jim Crow. :) Secondly, yes Charity, you could just do it. The mosques are pretty full (with men) for jumu'ah so you wont be able to get easily unless you went early. Or, you could do what shamima, my wife, did at one of those Sandton (Marlboro actually) mosques one jumuah. She had gotten a lift with a guy who decided to stop there for jumuah, not caring about her needs. So she just went and prayed in the garden of the masjid. Apparently, it was a nice feeling praying in the garden. but also, lots of embarassed male faces.
