salaam, I don't think the African-American community is lead by its elite class, in the same way most immigrant groups are. We are simply not as intradependent on one other for our survival in the same way most immigrant groups are at this point in our history. While African-Americans are socially conservative, their has always been a history of "tolerance" (not full equality) for the "other" among us. We have always been a minority - we have no real homeland other than here. The black church has always been filled with gays and lesbians who were visible in some form or another. Single parent homes have always existed in the African-American community (due to circumstance) and the community, as well as the Black Church embraced those families. Secondly, assimilation has never been a real option or goal for Blacks. Even African-American muslims will never be persuaded to support Bush or neo-cons no matter how much they may agree in their opposition to gay marriage and abortion. Welfare and Jobs don't explain it because most blacks who vote don't benefit from welfare, and right now all Americans want to know where the jobs are.
