The First International Progressive Muslim Meetup

It's been a while since I've posted--been in a mailing list hibernation of
sorts while trying to hatch all kinds of crazy MWU! schemes.

Here is one that we're launching today that I hope you will like .

For the longest time, many of us (especially those not already actively
involved in progressive Muslim organizations) have wanted a way of
organizing and meeting other progressives.

So are you ready to take your relationship with MWU! to the next level?

If so, then go to http://progmuslims.meetup.com

Muslim WakeUp! has been online for just over a year now, and in that time,
we've proven that Progressive Muslims are not some fringe group. In fact,
there are enough of you out there that you've already made us the most
popular Muslim online magazine in the world, with over 60,000 readers per
month and growing fast.

Many of you have written us asking for ways to go beyond just the website.

Here it is.

We've thought long and hard about how best to start, and we decided that it
would be only fitting for a Progressive Muslim organization to begin at the
grassroots. We want the process to be completely transparent and democratic.

That's why we've started the Progressive Muslim Meetup.

You will decide the priorities, the action items, the discussion topics, the
events to plan. MWU! will be here to help coordinate it all and to provide a
forum for local groups to communicate with each other and compare notes.

You want to get active around women's space in mosques? The 2004 elections?
Forming ties with local non-Muslim communities? Learning more about
progressive interpretations of Islam? Inviting speakers? Or just meeting new
friends who aren't interested in proclaiming judgment on you? We'll all be
deciding together.

The first step is to check out the Progressive Muslims Meetup page at
http://progmuslims.meetup.com (you'll need to sign-up there--the process is
free and painless).

Meetings can take place in over 600 cities worldwide (wherever 5 or more
people decide to attend), and they will take place the first Saturday of
every month at 2pm (local time).

After the meeting, you will be able to use a special section on MWU! to
update everyone else about your meeting, post pics if you like, ask
questions, continue discussions--all the stuff we'll need to prepare for our
next international Meetup the following month.
