see, it depends what irshad thinks is 'golden.' the only time she recalls is "not very long lived. in fact, it is quite short lived. it existed roughly between 9th and 11th centuries." (from "my faith is a mess" an interview with manji from beliefnet.com)

to believe the faith have had a golden era means believing the faith is good, which she doesn't. she believes the trouble is with islam, which i so kindly disagree. the trouble is actually quite with certain muslims. because truly, the same faith is practised in turkey and saudi, and malaysia and iran, and bosnia and pakistan, etc. places that are far apart in thinking and actions.

and what is a golden era? in my opinion, tolerance in the area was brought by islam. i remember reading about caliphs who protected non-muslims, building them religious houses and what have you. and some brought the destructed non-muslims back to their homes. many caliphs guaranteed personal belief, and protected the rights of non-muslims. all of these things were quite happening way before the 9th century. me thinks that is pretty golden.

also, islam starts golden anyway :) the first constitution in the world was brought by muhammad (the medina constitution, where the rights of all people were guaranteed.) but certainly even during muhammad's lifetime, some muslims were doing horrible things. and that is the case even today. it is just that now those cute bad muslims have an international media that loves to put the spotlight on them. works out for them... and the muslims like sister irshad.

This is a little note in defense of Irshad Manji,

I do not recall Ms. Manji ever denying the "golden era" of Islamic history. In fact, her platform message has consistently been to resurrect that very era when Islam was at its most vital and progressive. So let us not be make unsubstantiated accussations without first seeking some clarification.
