Wahabbism was originally embraced for political reasons - it was a way to 
oppose the Ottoman Empire.  So the saudis backed it, and hence it is backed 
by saudi oil money.  That is why it has spread throughout USA in particular 
- so much money is spent on distributing their pamphlets, their version of 
the Quran (Ibn Baz), their imams etc.
