On the one hand you have Muslim guest who might not be there if not for the state department invites and yet you are forced to deal with them. Are the guests all in-line, so to say, with US policies, are they people you respct or at minimum gain some insight from? Does this provide you with some kind of insight that helps you in any way? For myself I would be tempted to just decline as a first reaction and yet.. I would consider it carefully. I have met with people I know personally who I disagree with completely and actually abhor in certain contexts where I felt there was an insight I could gain or a debate could be prompted in public. Actually after Sep 11 , the Muslim community, Arab and Sikh community and various political players all decided to call a meeting with the Attonrey General's office and invite the FBI, State Department , and other Law enforcement officials. we in Massachussets were the only state to do so. We did this to get to them first , to be proactive and transparent and our main concern was to provide them with information and create working groups to educate them , and most importantly to protect our communities from acts of violence,,,,,,, but then the ADL showed up and most of us felt there was a line we just could not cross. Ironic as it may seem to work with the "Feds" with a particular purpose ( a higher prioroty ) seemed reasonable and yet the ADL( a wing of the JDL ) was not a group we were willing to even stay in the same room with. Now the place gets a regular turn around of guests the Muslim world who are here as guest of the USA State Department - all in the name of dialogue and I get invited to lunch meetings with them.
