Delic,

As a Muslim, it was with dismay and alarm that I read about your recent
khutbah condemning Sister Itrath Syed and her political position on
civil rights for gays in Canada. I am writing to urge you to
reconsider your actions and your position.

I understand that in giving the khutbah you probably believed yourself
to be enjoining the good and forbidding evil. But what is "good" and
"evil" in this case? Sister Itrath's position, that it is only by
protecting the civil rights of all Canadians that Muslim civil rights
can be protected, is both logical and motivated by a concern for the
Muslim ummah. It may be disagreed with, but it is not evil, not
motivated by evil, and should not be condemned as such. Rather, it
should be debated among the Muslim community so that all may understand
the issues involved.

Is it "good" to publically condemn a sister who has the best interests
of the ummah at heart and who is, with her family, a long-standing
member of your masjid? Especially in a forum such as a khutbah where
she has no opportunity to respond? Is it "good" to cause the pain and
humiliation she and her family felt? I do not believe it is.

I urge you to apologize to Sister Itrath and her family and to provide
a forum in which Sister Itrath may present her opinions and have them
discussed by the Muslim community.

Your sister in Islam,
