Over the past few years Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somalian-born 
Muslim woman who serves as a MP for the conservative VVD party, has 
repeatedly drawn attention with her position on women's rights in Islam.

On August 28, Dutch media reported that she has made a short film, which 
will be aired on Dutch TV on Sunday, August 29. It is expected that this 
film will lead to fierce debates inside and outside the Netherlands on 
Islam's record regarding women's rights.

Hereunder is an English translation of an article that appeared in NRC 
Handelsblad, one of the Netherlands' most respected newspapers (for those 
who happen to read Dutch, I have pasted the original text as well).

NEW PROVOCATION BY HIRSI ALI

Together with cinematographer Theo van Gogh, VVD politican Ayaan Hirsi Ali 
has made a short film,  in which severely criticizes texts from the Qur’an. 
It concerns Qur’anic verses approving of violence against women. The title 
of the film is 'Submission' – meaning “Submission to Allah”.  The lead 
actress is dressed in a see-through veil. Arabic Qur’an texts, pertaining to 
-- among other things -- the corporal punishment of women, have been 
calligraphed across the maimed bodies of extras.

The English-language film – which was secretly recorded in Amsterdam, last 
month – will be aired tomorrow in the TV show 'Zomergasten', in which Hirsi 
Ali will appear. After that, 'Submission' will be distributed 
internationally. According to Hirsi Ali the film is bound to create major 
consternation. “The whole Muslim World will turn against me.”

The lead actress, a young woman, sings her love during a prayer in a mosque. 
She shows Allah the consequences of the prescriptions He has given in the 
Qur’an. For example, the Islamic Holy Scripture permits men to beat their 
wives, when they have been unfaithful or disobedient.

For the sake of their safety, the actors have been depicted unrecognizable. 
Their names and those of the other participants have not been made public.

VVD  Chief Whip, Mr. van Aertsen, and Deputy Prime Minister Zalm have said 
they can agree with the film’s content. “Yes, that nude body,” says Zalm. 
“Whether the exercise is a cinematographic success is (of) secondary 
(importance)” says van Aertsen. 'Submission' (costs: 18,000 Euro) has been 
financed by van Gogh and was purchased by the VPRO TV station.

This is not the first time that Hirsi Ali attacks what she calls “Islam’s 
cruelties”. She regularly received death threats from Islamic organizations 
and is under (police) protection. “Sometimes I am scared” she says in 
today’s newspaper about her provocations. “But only resistance from the 
inside will help. I literally expose the cruelty of Islam.”

ROTTERDAM, 28 AUG. VVD-politica Ayaan Hirsi Ali heeft samen met cineast Theo 
van Gogh een korte film gemaakt waarin zij teksten uit de koran ernstig 
bekritiseert. Het gaat om verzen die geweld tegen vrouwen goedkeuren. De 
titel van de film luidt Submission, bedoeld als 'overgave aan Allah'. De 
hoofdrolspeelster is gekleed in een doorzichtige sluier. Op de toegetakelde 
lichamen van de figuranten zijn in het Arabisch koranteksten gekalligrafeerd 
die onder meer betrekking hebben op het lijfelijk straffen van vrouwen.


De Engelstalige film, afgelopen maand in het geheim in Amsterdam opgenomen, 
wordt morgen uitgezonden in het televisieprogramma Zomergasten, waarin Hirsi 
Ali optreedt. Daarna zal Submission internationaal worden verspreid. Volgens 
Hirsi Ali zal dit leiden tot grote consternatie: ,,De hele moslimwereld zal 
over me heenvallen.''

De hoofdrolspeelster, een jonge vrouw, bezingt in haar gebed in een moskee 
de liefde. Ze toont Allah de gevolgen van zijn voorschriften in de koran. Zo 
staat de islamitische heilige schrift toe dat vrouwen die ontrouw of 
ongehoorzaam zijn aan hun man mogen worden geslagen.

In verband met de veiligheid van de acteurs zijn zij onherkenbaar in beeld 
gebracht. Hun namen en die van de overige medewerkers zijn niet 
bekendgemaakt.

VVD-fractieleider Van Aartsen en vice-premier Zalm kunnen zich vinden in de 
inhoud van de film. ,,Dat blote lijf hè?'', zegt Zalm. ,,Of deze exercitie 
cinematografisch geslaagd is, lijkt me secundair'', zegt Van Aartsen. 
Submission is voorgefinancierd door Van Gogh (kosten 18.000 euro) en door de 
VPRO aangekocht.

Het is niet de eerste keer dat Hirsi Ali de aanval opent op wat zij noemt 
'de wreedheden van de islam'. Ze ontvangt regelmatig doodsbedreigingen van 
islamitische groepen en wordt beveiligd. ,,Soms ben ik bang'', zegt ze 
vandaag in deze krant over haar provocaties. ,,Maar alleen verzet van 
binnenuit helpt. Ik leg de wreedheid van de islam letterlijk bloot.''
