I can recall a message either here or on another list where a physicist said he thought CAS was impossible. 

CAS is said to be achieved by applying an alternating magnetic field to a specimen being frozen, and the effect can be demonstrated using a container of water which freezes without expansion to a glassy state. No one has been able to find out hard details, even from the patent. If it does work and someone can do a simple experiment to reproduce the effect in a freezer by passing an appropriate (what value?) alternating current at the appropriate frequency (what value?) around a coil (how many turns?) surrounding a plastic drinks bottle of water then we can all believe it. If this cannot be done, then I suggest healthy scepticism. 

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought the purpose of patent disclosure was so that other scientists could verify that the patent actually works.

Well, we are all at the same level here on cryonet.
Yet,what is said make sense:
If you supercool some water, the smallest perturbation turn it into ice.
That is because shear displacement between molecules can act as a nucleation
site to start a crystal.
The point of the CAS freezer is precisely to induce rotation in water
molecules at supercooled temperature.
The guess is that it will initiate freezing at very many places.
If there are very many starting ice freezing points, each will be near
another.
In this way, there can't be large crystals, only very many small ones.
This is not an amorphous state, only a step towards it.
It must be interesting to note that this is precisely how anti-freeze
proteins work.
So the guess thinking says it must work, note yet that is not proof that it
really work.
There is no way to get that proof outside the experiment.
If we want to know, we have to pay for the device and test it.

Polyampholytes as low toxic efficient cryoprotective agents with antifreeze protein properties.
    Matsumura K, Hyon SH. Department of Medical Simulation Engineering, Institute for Frontier Medical Sciences, Kyoto University, 53 Kawahara-cho, Shogoin, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 606-8507, Japan.
    Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has been used for several decades as the most efficient cryoprotective agent (CPA) for many types of cells and tissues in spite of its cytotoxicity and its effects on differentiation. Here we report that polyampholytes with an appropriate ratio of amino and carboxyl groups show higher cryopreservation efficiency and lower cytotoxicity than DMSO. Culture medium solutions of epsilon-poly-L-lysine (PLL) with more than 50 mol% of amino groups carboxylated showed excellent post-thaw survival efficiency of 95% murine L929 cells, and rat mesenchymal stem cells fully retained the potential for differentiation without serum. We also found that carboxylated PLLs showed antifreeze protein properties, such as ice recrystallization inhibition, which may contribute to succe
 ssful cryopreservation by membrane protection. Thus, these polyampholytes can replace DMSO as new materials for CPAs in various preserving functions and will also be useful in studies elucidating the mechanisms of cryopreservation.

Subject: Place to live near Alcor

I mentioned a few weeks ago that Alcor member, Andy Popper, was buying a home near Alcor and he was going to rent rooms to cryonicists who want to live close to Alcor and with other Cryoncists.  The deal has closed and Andy has a wonderful 6 bedroom home on one full acre.

He is planting lots of fruit trees and fixing the place up very nice.  It will take a few months but rooms are ready to be rented now.

For those people who want (or need) to live close to Alcor, Andy will rent rooms out for a very reasonable price.  This is a chance to live in a nice home with other cryonicists.

Andy is not here all the time so I have agreed to help him find cryonicists to rent the rooms.  Anyone interested please contact me and we can set up a time for you to see the home.

Feel welcome to pass this info on to any cryonicists you think might benefit from it.
