Not all simulations or artificial constructs are as prone to
information loss as the map and terrain example you prefer to use.

Can you tell the difference between a real voice and a digitally recorded voice?

Can you tell the difference between synthetically created sugar and
"natural" sugar.

Your examples only really highlight your biases.

I'm sorry I also meant to add chess. A game of chess is the same
regardless of whether it is played on a real board or a virtual board.

According to one of the most successful psychological approaches
today, terror management theory, this is erroneous. The 'instinct' is
always present, but it is suppressed from awareness by cultural myths:
Sheesh. I said "at most times in modern conditions..." So it's worth
telling me that the instinct isn't absent, just suppressed?

I think David's heart is in the right place, but sometimes!

Brook Norton's thesis that survival is meaningless has
as usual some good thoughts, but if we want accuracy
we need to be careful. With reasonable choice of allowable
language, it is certainly true that "you" or any object or system
can properly be regarded as surviving in certain ways and
to certain degrees. This is observable.

The problem again is not what you want, but what you ought
to want based on logic and biology. It's complicated and
subtle, and satisfaction is not guaranteed, but that's why I wrote
Youniverse
