Just think about this the next time a FedEx van comes speeding past you --
that four-wheeled transporter could be carrying containers equipped with
liquid nitrogen cooling that keeps its innards at a chilly -150 degrees
Celsius. Don't worry, though, says FedEx, the use of dry vapor is actually
safer than the currently used dry ice and classifies this new methodology as
non-hazardous. While we may like to poke fun, it sounds like a pretty
legitimate boon for healthcare and biotechnology shipments, which can now be
maintained at a deeply frozen temperature for up to 10 days at a time. FedEx
will provide the self-sufficient container and collects it upon delivery of
the goods, while also monitoring its condition during transit. No word on
whether or when DiGiorno will be signing up for the service.

Healthcare Customers Will Benefit from Combination of Sophisticated

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) today announced the
launch of FedEx Deep Frozen Shipping Solution, which offers an innovative
end-to-end service for the shipping of temperature-sensitive healthcare
products around the world. The new offering is an important component of the
broader FedEx HealthCare Solutions portfolio of services for customers in the
life sciences and biopharma industries.

The solution uses liquid nitrogen dry vapor technology that maintains a
temperature of below -150 degrees Celsius for up to 10 days using the

classified as dangerous goods. In addition, the overall process is simple.
Customers place orders online through a customized FedEx portal. FedEx
provides the pre-conditioned container to the customer to load their
temperature-sensitive product. FedEx then delivers the container to its final
destination while actively monitoring the shipment and intervening if needed
during transit. Finally, FedEx picks up the container and returns it for
refurbishing.

This article says Japanese scientists use magnetic fields to prevent ice
formation down to -10C -- and then ice forms instantly, without crystals. In
other words, it vitrifies.

Now, -10 is not a cryonics temperature, but this still might be useful. If
the water stays where it is and does not leak through cell membranes as it
does with normal slow freezing, and if it then vitrifies instantly without
crystals as they say, and if it remains crystal free down to -195 C (and
during rewarming), then perhaps this could replace vitrification solutions
with all their problems and toxicities. Of course that's a good many "ifs".
I've seen mention of this before but never heard that it prevented ice
crystals, just that it depressed freezing 10 degrees, which by itself is
nothing. But instant freezing, without time for water to move in and out of
cells, and no crystals -- that might be useful.
This may be garbled, but they do say they can use it for long term tooth
storage with a reimplantation success rate of 87%. So it does seem to keep
cells alive, to prevent damage from osmosis etc., in a moderately
thermally-large object. That is, we know we can do thin slices because they cool
almost instantly, but for larger objects it takes so long to cool that ice forms
and does damage. A tooth is not as large as a human head, but it's a lot
thicker than a thousandth-of-an-inch slice, so it's interesting that the
cells inside seem to survive.
This is hard to understand though -- the heat of melting/solidification for
water is something like 80 Cal/g, equivalent to an 80 deg. change in water
temperature. If you just have water at -10C, then even if it instantly
warmed to 0C that's only enough heat to solidify 1/8 th of it. (I've forgotten
the exact term for this and maybe the exact value, but I know it's large.)

Subject: Two professors
Those presumably best qualified to express opinions about growth of
cryonics are social psychologists. Two of these are members of the Cryonics
Institute who do not hide their affiliation--Dr. Ronald G. Havelock and Dr.
David S. Stodolsky. the former previously at the University of Michigan and the
latter presently at the University of Copenhagen. They are poles apart in
their views, as I read them.
Dr. Stodolsky's main thrust seems to be that cryonics is doomed to slow
growth until we can effect a basic change in public attitudes, which might be
done with a couple of million dollars worth of public relations efforts. He
also, it appears to me, puts misleading emphasis on the role of religion.
He emphasizes "terror management," the terror in question being related to
attacks on one's world view.
Dr. Havelock's views are given in his recent book, ACCELERATION, which I am
in the process of reading and will review in due course. The thrust is
that basic historical forces are at work putting the wind at our backs, and
improving in recent decades and years. I agree with most of what he writes,
but have not yet decided on the quantitative usefulness of his formulation.
At the least, he offers a good antidote to the seeping poison so
widespread.
There is entertainment here as well as potential armament. If more of us
(you) buy the book and promote it, we (you) will be striking a righteous
blow.
