Mixed, my feelings are.

I have two copies sitting on my shelf: the 1993 hardcover from
Incunabula, and the July, 1971 issue of _The Magazine of Fantasy
and Science Fiction_, where it appeared in an earlier version as by
Delany and James Sallis.

Actually, I like the magazine version a little better. It's perhaps a
bit clumsy, but it hasn't had its surfaces polished to the point where
they all shine with equal lustre. There is more, for lack of a better
word, feeling to it: and perhaps it is also that this terribly sincere
and earnest anti-war, anti-military story simply worked better in the
'60s (which were still going on in 1971) than in the '90s.

Still, I _do_ like it. I don't class it with _Nova_, or _Stars in My
Pockets_, but I like it better than _The Jewels of Aptor_ (if not
as well as the Towers trilogy).
