I just read this excellent biography by Julie Phillips. A fascinating
portrait of the woman who was James Tiptree Jr. -- who assumed, among
other roles, those of: a white child on safari to deepest Africa, a
debutante, an artist, a WAC, a chicken farmer, a CIA operative, a
psychology researcher, and a male science fiction writer. As well, the
latter part of the book gives a vivid portrait of the epistolary world of
sf in the 70s and early 80s. Makes me want to read a Selected Letters of
Tiptree -- and now I have to dig up a recent issue of F&SF that has more
of Ursula Le Guin's and Tiptree's correspondance.
I haven't been a particular fan of Tiptree but this book makes me want to
read him again.
Obligatory Delany Content: Chip makes an appearance or two, usually in
lists of so-called New Wave writers, but also during an infamous written
debate about feminism in SF (he and Tiptree were asked to give the male
perspective as writers sympathetic to feminism -- quite the interesting
irony).
