What would anyone say about the presence of "the erotic body" in this new novel? I have not read it yet. I am writing an essay on said use of the erotic body in Don DeLillo's THE BODY ARTIST and Robert Coover's THE ADVENTURES OF LUCKY PIERRE, and am looking for a third major author with a work that fits the theme. I could easily use THE MAD MAN or HOGG but I want it to be fairly new -- in this case really new -- and a work that doesn't have any scholarly criticism yet (neither the DeLillo nor Coover do).
On that note, just to toot that horn, I am proud to say I published the first essay on HOGG, in the Delany issue of the Review of Contemporary Fiction. In fact, I'm not sure the book was out yet when the journal was published, as I had it in manuscript. That was 12 years ago. It wasn't the best essay in the world, I'd write something completely different today...but there are still things I like about it...
I have always identified with Chip in wearing the different hats -- I write genre, and erotica, and academic crit lit (forthcoming books on Vollmann, Gordon Lish and Harlan Ellison) and have never had diffuclty jumping from one to another: it's all the same to me.
