So,

I went to the Art Museum to see the Animated Paintings exhibit: my Samuel R. Delany list
had mentioned the video painting "Belllona" by Ann Lislegaard, inspired by Delany's Dhalgren
and I sat through two cycles of the 11-minute film piece. It's not a film of the story of
Dhalgren- such isn't necessary. It's instead a movement through a series of
spaces, windowed, mirrored, prismed, lit by spheres which recall the second sun and second
moon ("George") of lost Bellona, city at the end of time. It was pretty interesting. Other video
paintings in the exhibit included simple projections of people washing, walking, etc., and
some very elaborate pieces. My favorite was a piece by South African artist William Kentridge,
called Tide Table. It was hideously complex: he literally drew over and erased
every frame of the video. It is impossible to describe this art. You simply have to see it.

I feel that Dhalgren would be a far more difficult book to film, and Lislegaard's film instead
shows us another essential part of the novel: that if Kidd entered the city, he never left it; if
he left the city, he never entered it.
