Is the email list falloff in average traffic strongly correlated with the rise of twitter? To me, twitter does not seem like a close substitute. A closer substitute might be web discussion forums, which have been growing steadily for years. The closest substitute to a book email discussion list that I can think of would be the discussion boards on goodreads.com.
