Just Imagine

I happened upon a charming SF movie from 1930 entitled Just
Imagine. From the same vintage as Metropolis (1927), King Kong (1933) and The
Wizard of Oz (1939), this too is an escapist fantasy though a comedy unlike the
aforementioned. Though the main character’s alcoholism is treated as a motivation
for silly antics, many of the gags are still smile-winning. The futuristic (1980)
New York City is adorned by Hugh Ferriss skyscrapers, art deco and lots of
gadgets. The 85-year-old movie is not always politely correct by today’s
standards and at times the story is brought to a halt by singing but rather
than be annoyed by these details I urge you to accept it in the light-hearted
manner it was intended.
