Sounds like the sort of thing Robert Sheckley would write. Reminds me of
his story, The Accountant, in which a family of dark wizards are upset when
their son declares he wants to become an accountant and not a Wizard like
his father. After they try various things to persuade him, including the
ghost of his grandfather and finally the terrifying demon of children,
their son calls for help to his accounting books. A fearful apparition
appears. It is that most dreadful of all possible horrors, The Accountant
himself, who sends the demon packing and informs the parents that their son
has pledged his soul to serve him.
