I have read Dreamsnake and while the basic description is correct at
http://io9.com/5892742/10-ultra-weird-science-fiction-novels-that-became-required-reading,
it leaves much out.  The hero, who is named Snake, is not looking for a
recreational high; she is healer who uses snake venom to help people with
diseases. I was more impressed with the giving and caring nature of the
protagonist than I was by dreamsnake, which is used to calm patients and
taking away their pain.  The snakes and their resulting effects did not come
across to me as a LCD trip but more as a unique medical source.
