This really makes me think of The Gate to Women's Country, although it has
been a while since I read that and the fit does not seem perfect.  My memory
had the protagonist going on a trip where she is raped by the man who was
suppose to be in love with her.  After which she and the man are both
attacked and captured by Holylanders, a very patriarchal group. 

  I agree with you that Tepper is a likely choice, or perhaps someone
inspired by Tepper.
