This really makes me think of Tepper's The Gate to Women's Country. It has been a while since I read it and the fit does not seem to be perfect, but the propagandist is raped by a man who was supposedly in love with her. She and the man are both attached and captured by Holylanders, who are a very patriarchal society and also religious. Hope this is helpful: the wikipedia article on The Gate to Women's Country has a good summary.
