The scary delights of Richard Matheson
Richard Matheson (Beatrice de Gea / Los Angeles Times)Scott BradfieldGoing =
as far back as the =E2=80=9960s, many of my most indelible schoolyard memor=
ies concern the breathless, morning-after enthusiasms my friends and I exch=
anged over =E2=80=9CTwilight Zone=E2=80=9D episodes, such as =E2=80=9CDeath=
Ship,=E2=80=9D =E2=80=9CThird From the Sun=E2=80=9D or =E2=80=9CNightmare =
at 20,000 Feet=E2=80=9D (=E2=80=9Cand when they landed the plane, and they=
=E2=80=99re draggin=E2=80=99 this guy off to the booby hatch, it turns out =
that the wing of the plane really=C2=A0was=C2=A0torn to bits, and everybody=
was almost=C2=A0killed=E2=80=9D). In those fading screen-lit stories that =
we tried to keep alive the next morning among the rusty swings and slides, =
we had discovered how inventive and surprising the world could be. It made =
us want to purvey those distinctly narrative pleasures we had received to e=
ach other. It made us want to be writers. The best of these episodes were al=
most always written by, or adapted from stories by, Richard Matheson. As Vi=
ctor LaValle notes in his introduction to this welcome, Halloween-timed ret=
rospective collection from Penguin Classics, many of us loved Matheson=E2=
=80=99s fiction long before we ever read him or knew his name. Often, our f=
irst exposures were either through =E2=80=9CTwilight Zone=E2=80=9D teleplay=
s or various big-screen adaptations (usually scripted by Matheson himself) =
such as =E2=80=9CThe Incredible Shrinking Man=E2=80=9D (1957) and =E2=80=9C=
The Legend of Hell House=E2=80=9D (1973), and the made-for-TV movies =E2=80=
=9CDuel=E2=80=9D (1971) and =E2=80=9CThe Night Stalker=E2=80=9D (1972).ADVE=
RTISINGinRead=C2=A0invented by TeadsWilliam Shatner faces a monster on the =
wing of the plane in "The Twilight Zone" ("The Twilight Zone")Almost every =
memory I have of being both frightened and absorbed by a modern story relat=
es back to Matheson. Even the worst film interpretations of his work manage=
d to reproduce some spark of the original genius. Fifty years later, I stil=
l recall watching the first film adaptation of Matheson=E2=80=99s revisioni=
st vampire classic =E2=80=9CI Am Legend=E2=80=9D on the late-night movie. I=
t was the now disregarded, cheapo Italian film =E2=80=9CThe Last Man on Ear=
th=E2=80=9D (1964), and despite its clumsy sets, pancake cosmetics and crea=
ky, sun-stained camera work, it lingers more vividly in my mind than the la=
ter, gussied-up, high-tech studio versions starring Charlton Heston (=E2=80=
=9CThe Omega Man,=E2=80=9D 1971) and Will Smith (2007=E2=80=99s =E2=80=9CI =
Am Legend=E2=80=9D). This is probably because Matheson=E2=80=99s stories ne=
ver shock viewers with gruesome effects or CGI wondrousness; instead, they =
worry them at the human level. And they never let a reader go until they=E2=
=80=99re finished.It=E2=80=99s possibly one of the reasons Matheson never b=
ecame as well-known as he should have been: When he finished with a story, =
there was nothing left over to spin into endless sequels or anthologies (no=
=E2=80=9CI Am Legend: Miami Shakedown=E2=80=9D). Nobody burned a plot idea=
down to ash like Matheson. Will Smith in the 2007 version of "I Am Legend" =
(Barry Wetcher S.M.P.S.P. / Warner Bros. Pictures)And while he had the gift=
of writing stories filled with those tight little through-lines that movie=
people love, his fiction was pre-eminently literary. He always knew where =
to start a story on the page; and he never padded it with needless plot dig=
ressions, flashbacks and repeat-as-needed atrocities. If Matheson had writt=
en =E2=80=9CThe Stand,=E2=80=9D it would be 12 pages long. It would be scar=
y. And when it was over, it wouldn=E2=80=99t need another word. Except mayb=
e this one: =E2=80=9CAhh.=E2=80=9DEven mediocre film versions of Matheson a=
re more absorbing than they might first appear. And even his oldest, most d=
og-eared stories are still being recycled as big-budget Hollywood movies 50=
or 60 years after they were first composed. Take, for example, Hugh Jackma=
n=E2=80=99s =E2=80=9CReal Steel=E2=80=9D (the 2011 film based on Matheson=
=E2=80=99s 1956 story =E2=80=9CSteel=E2=80=9D). Or the potentially maudlin=
=C2=A0Robin Williams=C2=A0journey through the afterlife, =E2=80=9CWhat Drea=
ms May Come=E2=80=9D (1998), in which Matheson does for heaven what he did =
for the vampire =E2=80=94 makes it plausible. Those movies may=C2=A0look=C2=
=A0awful when you first flick onto them via our crap-glutted televisions =
=E2=80=94 but just start watching one of them, and I dare you =E2=80=94 try=
to stop. There was nothing left over to spin into endless sequels or anthol=
ogies.... Nobody burned a plot idea down to ash like Matheson. In Matheson=
=E2=80=99s hands, even a gimmicky genre idea such as =E2=80=9CThe Shrinking=
Man=E2=80=9D (1956) will keep readers up at night. In that fairly obvious =
science-fiction set-up (atomic-era guy suffers endless miniaturization afte=
r being exposed to a nuclear test), there=E2=80=99s one extra twist that co=
mes along to make it snap: It=E2=80=99s not simply that he=E2=80=99s gettin=
g smaller, but that as he gets smaller, he grows more arrogant and angry. E=
ventually, after descending to the microscopic level in his spider-ridden b=
asement, he marches triumphantly into the garden, ready to face=C2=A0anythi=
ng. Only Matheson could make you believe in these preposterous-seeming stor=
ies. And leave you wanting more.Matheson never did the same thing twice; an=
d like the great Cornell Woolrich (the writer he most resembles), he always=
sets the fictional clock ticking on the first page. Stylistically, he adap=
ted his prose to his characters with all the=C2=A0joie de vivre=C2=A0of a F=
aulkner. Take, for example, this opening passage from his first published s=
tory, =E2=80=9CBorn of Man and Woman=E2=80=9D (1950), written when he was 2=
2:This day when it had light mother called me retch. You retch she said. I =
saw in her eyes the anger. I wonder what it is a retch.Like many Matheson c=
haracters, this grotesque, unlovable and increasingly distraught narrator h=
as been hidden away in the basement of an otherwise normal suburban family =
ever since his unfortunate =E2=80=9Cbirth.=E2=80=9D But that doesn=E2=80=99=
t mean he=E2=80=99ll stay there. Four pages of fiction you won=E2=80=99t fo=
rget."The Incredible Shrinking Man," 1954 (Universal International)Matheson=
=E2=80=99s characters often come up hard against the dullest, hottest, leas=
t extraordinary landscapes of American life: desert-locked coffee shops and=
diners, muzak-thrumming shopping malls and post-World War III punk rock ba=
rs. But however mundane and familiar those landscapes might first appear, t=
hey quickly take turns into darker territories: In =E2=80=9CDying Room Only=
,=E2=80=9D a couple stop in a creepily male-dominated off-road diner, where=
the husband goes into the bathroom and never comes out; in =E2=80=9CPrey,=
=E2=80=9D a young woman fights a lonely battle against a knife-wielding dev=
il doll, then just as she achieves an edgy standoff, considers inviting her=
overbearing, boyfriend-devouring mother over for a drink.Matheson even ref=
uses to leave Christmas alone with his tale of holiday wishes coming true (=
and not) in =E2=80=9CA Visit to Santa Claus.=E2=80=9D After all, what bette=
r time to ring out the old wife and ring in the new one? Fa la la.But it=E2=
=80=99s not Christmas yet, and since it=E2=80=99s only just about Halloween=
, this is really the time to sing songs for Matheson. As Rod Serling might =
say: Taken as Exhibit A. What appears to be on the surface a book of nicely=
printed stories. Well-designed. Reputable publisher. There=E2=80=99s even =
a cute little penguin on the cover. Go on. Let it into your house. Leave it=
on the coffee table while you go upstairs, undress and fix yourself a drin=
k. It=E2=80=99s time to relax in a region beyond space and time. In a regio=
n where, when you aren=E2=80=99t looking, the cute little penguins bite.Bra=
dfield is a novelist and critic. His most recent book is the novel =E2=80=
