Humanity has=C2=A0dispatched humans and/or robots to explore many different=
 alien worlds in our solar system, yet the number of large bodies from whic=
h we have brought samples back to Earth numbers only three: the Moon, Comet=
 81/P, and asteroid 25143 Itokawa. This is partly because of expense: a one=
-way robot mission is far less complicated than a two-way one, and there ar=
e all kinds of unknown variables that come into play in sample return missi=
ons. Now, as a Japanese space probe approaches the Ryugu asteroid, there's =
a chance that number will go up to four.After a long 186.4 million-mile jou=
rney =E2=80=94 one which took about three and half years =E2=80=94 a spacec=
raft named Hayabusa-2 has successfully rendezvoused=C2=A0with a unique aste=
roid named Ryugu.=E2=80=9CFrom this point, we are planning to conduct explo=
ratory activities in the vicinity of the asteroid, including scientific obs=
ervation of asteroid Ryugu and surveying the asteroid for sample collection=
,=E2=80=9D Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency JAXA confirmed in a press rel=
ease on Wednesday.Following its arrival, the next step is to prepare to sur=
vey the asteroid for sample collections. Hayabusa-2 is expected to bring ro=

an Fitzsimmons, an astronomer in the QUB Astrophysics Research Centre, expl=
ained in a press conference hosted by the B612 Foundation on Thursday. =E2=
=80=9CIn the past we have only done that with a different type of asteroid.=
=E2=80=9DThose past missions include NASA=E2=80=99s NEAR Shoemaker, which c=
ollected samples from an asteroid named Eros in 2001. (Unlike Hayabusa-2, N=
EAR Shoemaker was not a sample return mission, however.)=C2=A0Remote studie=
s of those=C2=A0samples,=C2=A0according to NASA, have since provided scient=
ists with a better understanding of how asteroids like Eros are linked to m=
eteorite samples found on Earth.Eros=C2=A0is an S-type asteroid =E2=80=94 s=
hort for silicaceous asteroid =E2=80=94 which means it orbits the sun, and =
is mostly composed of nickel-iron rock. Ryugu is thought to be different, a=
 C-type=C2=A0or=C2=A0carbonaceous asteroid=E2=80=94 in other words, contain=
ing largely carbon. While most asteroids, according to Fitzsimmons, are bel=
ieved to be C-type, it is important for scientists to continue to learn abo=
ut all different types of asteroids.=E2=80=9CBut that doesn=E2=80=99t guara=
ntee that when we want to deflect or closely inspect an asteroid in the fut=
ure that it will be silicate, it could well be a carbonaceous asteroid... a=
nd so we are going to learn a lot, first of all, just from the interaction,=
=E2=80=9D he said, referring to the interaction between Hayabusa-2 and Ryug=
u.The advancements made in such little time during this mission are remarka=
ble. As JAXA explains on its information page, not too long ago Ryugu was=
=C2=A0merely a featureless=C2=A0dot on the spacecraft's Star Tracker. It wa=
s not until earlier this week that scientists got a close look at the aster=
oid, and were surprised by its shape.=E2=80=9CFrom a distance, Ryugu initia=
lly appeared round, then gradually turned into a square before becoming a b=
eautiful shape similar to fluorite, known as the 'firefly stone' in Japanes=
e,=E2=80=9D project manager Yuichi Tsuda said in a 25 June statement."This =
form of Ryugu is scientifically surprising, and also poses a few engineerin=
g challenges,"=C2=A0the statement added, referring=C2=A0specifically to the=
 challenge of landing on a low-mass and therefore low-gravity object like R=
yugu.Fitzsimmons noted that the spacecraft's arrival at Ryugu has already y=
