R= eplace =E2=80=9Cyears=E2=80=9D with =E2=80=9Cdecades=E2=80=9D and authors c= an become very obscure indeed.The Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award was fo= unded in 2001 to draw attention to unjustly forgotten SF authors. It is a j= uried award; the founding judges were Gardner Dozois, Robert Silverberg, Sc= ott Edelman, and John Clute. The current judges are Elizabeth Hand, Barry N= . Malzberg, Mike Resnick, and Robert J. Sawyer1.I wish the award were more = widely known, that it had, perhaps, its own anthology. If it did,=C2=A0it m= ight look a bit like this.=C2=A0Who are the winners? Why should you care ab= out them? I am so happy I pretended you asked. In order of victory, from 20= 01 to 2018:Olaf Stapledon=C2=A0(10 May 1886=E2=80=936 September 1950) could= write narrow focus novels when he wanted to.=C2=A0Sirius, for example, foc= uses on the life of an intelligent dog, while=C2=A0Odd John=C2=A0is the bio= graphy of a super-genius in a world that=E2=80=99s not ready for him. But S= tapledon excelled at the epic: wide-focus visions of the past and future.= =C2=A0Last and First Men=C2=A0covers the history of eighteen distinct human= species over two billion years.=C2=A0Star Maker=C2=A0is even more ambitiou= s; it narrates a history of the universe.R.A. Lafferty=C2=A0(November 7, 19= 14=E2=80=93March 18, 2002) was not all that interested in plot. He excelled= at setting and literary style. He=E2=80=99s not to everyone=E2=80=99s tast= e, but those who enjoy Lafferty=E2=80=99s work enjoy it intensely. Lafferty= was sidelined by a long illness, during which time he was close to forgott= en. In recent years publishers from Wildside to Centipede Press have brough= t his work back into print.Edgar Pangborn=C2=A0(February 25, 1909=E2=80=93F= ebruary 1, 1976) was active as a mystery writer for twenty years before he = turned to science fiction in the 1950s. His humanist science fiction won fa= n acclaim. His novel=C2=A0A Mirror for Observers=C2=A0won the 1954 Internat= ional Fantasy Award. Many of his later pieces form the Tales of a Darkening= World sequence, set after war, plague, and climate change have reduced hum= anity to a tiny, barbaric remnant of today=E2=80=99s civilization. 1964=E2= =80=99s=C2=A0Davy2=C2=A0may be the best known in the series; I prefer the m= elancholy collection=C2=A0Still I Persist in Wondering. If read in publicat= ion order, Tales of a Darkening World betrays Pangborn=E2=80=99s increasing= ly pessimistic view of humans. Some early pieces are available on=C2=A0Gute= nberg. SF Gateway=E2=80=99s Edgar Pangborn Omnibus is also in print.Henry K= uttner=C2=A0(April 7, 1915=E2=80=93February 3, 1958) and=C2=A0C. L. Moore= =C2=A0(January 24, 1911=E2=80=93April 4, 1987) were both well-known authors= before their mutual friend Howard Lovecraft introduced them. Once they mar= ried, they were a powerhouse writing team. Because they often collaborated,= and because they sold the resulting works under whichever of their many by= lines seemed most suitable, due credit for specific pieces can be difficult= to establish. Thus it makes perfect sense to give them a joint award. My p= ersonal favourite of their collections is=C2=A0Two-Handed Engine, but it se= ems to be out of print. Look for the reprints of=C2=A0The Best of Henry Kut= tner=C2=A0and=C2=A0The Best of C. L. Moore.Leigh Brackett=C2=A0(December 7,= 1915=E2=80=93March 18, 1978) was lauded for her planetary adventures (she = moved her Eric John Stark adventures to the extra-solar world Skaith when s= pace probes rendered her pulp-era Solar System implausible) but that was on= ly one aspect of her work. In addition to writing SF and mysteries, she was= a successful script writer. Her credits include=C2=A0The Big Sleep,=C2=A0R= io Bravo,=C2=A0The Long Goodbye,=C2=A0and an obscure little film called=C2= =A0The Empire Strikes Back. Her planetary adventures tended to be long on a= ction and short on clear moral boundaries. I am particularly fond of her po= st-apocalyptic=C2=A0The Long Tomorrow. Readers interested in her planetary = adventures should look for the recent reprints of=C2=A0The Ginger Star,=C2= =A0The Hounds of Skaith, and=C2=A0The Reavers of Skaith.William Hope Hodgso= n=C2=A0(15 November 1877=E2=80=9319 April 1918) predated today=E2=80=99s fo= rmalized genre boundaries. One might think of him as working somewhere in t= he intersection of weird fantasy and cosmic horror. His best known works ar= e the dying-Earth horror novel=C2=A0The Night Land=C2=A0and the hallucinato= ry=C2=A0The House on the Borderland.=C2=A0You may never have read either, b= ut odds are you=E2=80=99ve read works influenced by one or the other. Hodgs= on died at Ypres, during WWI; hence several of his works are public domain = and available at=C2=A0Project Gutenberg.Daniel F. Galouye=C2=A0(11 February= 1920=E2=80=937 September 1976) was a journalist until health issues forced= his retirement3. He was prolific. Many of his stories feature protagonists= with unrealized potential and nowhere near enough information about their = circumstances. His=C2=A0Counterfeit World=C2=A0AKA=C2=A0Simulachron-3=C2=A0= (filmed as=C2=A0The 13th=C2=A0Floor) seems the obvious starting point. A fe= w of his=C2=A0works are available at Gutenberg.Stanley G. Weinbaum=C2=A0(Ap= ril 4, 1902=E2=80=93December 14, 1935) died of cancer only eighteen months = after his debut story=C2=A0A Martian Odyssey=C2=A0saw print. Although he da= bbled in super-science, he seems to have by and large played fair with his = readers. His oeuvre may be as close to hard SF as one might find in the 193= 0s. I recommend the ebook reprint of=C2=A0The Best of Stanley G. Weinbaum.A= . Merritt=C2=A0(January 20, 1884=E2=80=93August 21, 1943) found time during= his active journalism career to pen eight science fantasy novels and an as= sortment of short stories. Readers curious about his vivid alternate worlds= and, um, energetic prose could start with his classic=C2=A0The Moon Pool, = available on Gutenberg.Industrial psychologist=C2=A0Mark Clifton=C2=A0(? 19= 06=E2=80=93November 1963) may be best known for winning the second Best Nov= el Hugo for=C2=A0They=E2=80=99d Rather Be Right,=C2=A0of which the less sai= d the better. Much of his output focused on either the supercomputer Bossy = (wise but distrusted by humans) and the Ralph Kennedy psionic tales. The st= ory I=E2=80=99d suggest to anyone whom I didn=E2=80=99t actively dislike is= the sentimental=C2=A0=E2=80=9CStar, Bright,=E2=80=9D=C2=A0whose view of su= per-kids is charmingly unhorrific. If you=E2=80=99ve annoyed me recently, t= hen by all means track down=C2=A0They=E2=80=99d Rather Be Right.Although=C2= =A0Katherine MacLean=C2=A0(January 22, 1925=E2=80=93) has written novels, i= t was an early flurry of short pieces (most published in the 1950s) that dr= ew her to SF readers=E2=80=99 attention. Stories of particular note include= =E2=80=9CThe Snowball Effect,=E2=80=9D about sociological research that pr= oves all too successful, =E2=80=9CPictures Don=E2=80=99t Lie,=E2=80=9D abou= t believing one=E2=80=99s eyes, and =E2=80=9CAnd Be Merry,=E2=80=9D in whic= h a woman struggles with the terrors of immortality. There are many other M= acLean stories worth reading. Alone of the names on this list, MacLean won = the Rediscovery while still living. Although she has not published in the l= ast generation, she is still alive and may yet break her silence.As Samuel = R. Delany has pointed out on Facebook,=C2=A0MacLean is an ideal candidate f= or=C2=A0Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master, which is given only to the livi= ng. Speaking for myself, I implore the SFWA to consider her for this award.= Fredric Brown=C2=A0(October 29, 1906=E2=80=93March 11, 1972) was,=C2=A0as p= reviously discussed, a master of the short-short story, although he hardly = restricted himself to that form. Readers interested in his novel-length mat= erial could look for his alternate universe comedy=C2=A0What Mad Universe, = although I would lean more towards suggesting NESFA=E2=80=99s=C2=A0From The= se Ashes: The Complete Short Science Fiction of Fredric Brown.Wyman Guin=C2= =A0(March 1, 1915=E2=80=93February 19, 1989) is one of two authors who have= won the Rediscovery whose work I have not managed to track down. Aside fro= m his association with=C2=A0Galaxy Magazine, I know little about his fictio= n. Alas, he seems to be very, very thoroughly out of print.Mildred Clingerm= an=C2=A0(March 14, 1918=E2=80=93February 26, 1997) is the other author in w= hose work I am not widely read. It=E2=80=99s not for lack of trying, becaus= e I=E2=80=99ve seen her work referenced favourably over the years. But! In = the interval between writing my=C2=A0review of the Rediscovery Award Anthol= ogy I wish existed=C2=A0and composing this essay,=C2=A0The Clingerman Files= =C2=A0was published. Not only does it contain her previously published work= , it also includes some pieces previously unpublished. A copy is even now h= eaded my way.Clark Ashton Smith=C2=A0(January 13, 1893=E2=80=93August 14, 1= 961) was a mainstay of=C2=A0Weird Tales=C2=A0in the era of Lovecraft, Howar= d, and cover artist Margaret Brundage. Smith=E2=80=99s vivid, gleefully mor= bid tales featured protagonists not destined for long lives. But then, who = would expect longevity for characters who proclaim I am now at work on an apparatus by means of which, when it is perfected, I= hope to manifest in their essential purity the radiations of malign force. I can see no way in which=C2=A0that=C2=A0could go horribly wrong=E2=80=A6Re= aders new to Smith might consider Prime=E2=80=99s=C2=A0The Return of the So= rcerer.Writer, editor and activist=C2=A0Judith Merril=C2=A0(January 21, 192= 3=E2=80=93September 12, 1997) was a member of the Futurians, a fellowship o= f writers, editors, artists, and fans whose collective efforts guided scien= ce fiction away from Campbell=E2=80=99s narrow vision. Her noteworthy ficti= on includes the disturbing =E2=80=9CThat Only a Mother,=E2=80=9D the co-wri= tten military SF novel=C2=A0Gunner Cade, and the post-holocaust=C2=A0Shadow= on the Hearth. Readers new to Merril should look for a copy of=C2=A0Homeca= lling and Other Stories: The Complete Solo Short SF of Judith Merril.Despit= e her accomplishments as a writer, it=E2=80=99s her role as an editor for w= hich Merril is best known. Her variously titled=C2=A0The Year=E2=80=99s Gre= atest Science Fiction and Fantasy/Annual of the Year=E2=80=99s Best S-F=C2= =A0ran from 1957 to 1968, followed by two Best of the Best volumes in 1970.= Although there have been many Best SF annuals, Merril=E2=80=99s stood out = for the breadth of the net she cast, drawing stories from well outside the = usual borders of science fiction. She is to date the only woman to helm a b= est SF annual solo4.Seabury Quinn=C2=A0(January 1, 1889=E2=80=93December 24= , 1969), first published in 1917, was a prolific contributor to=C2=A0Weird = Tales=C2=A0(a magazine of which the judges for this award appear quite fond= ). Occult detective Jules de Grandin featured in many of them, enough to fi= ll all three volumes of=C2=A0The Complete Tales of Jules de Grandin=C2=A0(H= orror on the Links,=C2=A0The Devil=E2=80=99s Rosary, and=C2=A0The Dark Ange= l.).Activist=C2=A0Frank M. Robinson=C2=A0(August 9, 1926=E2=80=93June 30, 2= 014) in no way limited himself to writing fiction (his political activities= won him a spot in the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame). Even his role= in SF was wide-ranging=E2=80=A6and long-lived. His sixteen novels ranged f= rom psionic thriller=C2=A0The Power=C2=A0to the generation ship Bildungsrom= an=C2=A0The Dark Beyond the Stars. With=C2=A0Thomas Scortia=C2=A0he was aut= hor of several successful thrillers, ranging from=C2=A0The Glass Inferno=C2= =A0(which contributed to the ensemble disaster film=C2=A0The Towering Infer= no),=C2=A0The Prometheus Crisis,=C2=A0The Nightmare Factor,=C2=A0and=C2=A0T= he Gold Crew.=C2=A0Who will be the next winner of this award? Not being a j= udge, I couldn=E2=80=99t say. But I am very curious to find out.1: Unfortun= ately the Cordwainer Smith Foundation site stopped updating their list of R= ediscovery winners in 2012 (although Wikipedia keeps a list), because, if I= understand a recent email exchange correctly, they thought File 770 was pr= eserving information about the award. While File 770 does report on the awa= rd (and is where I got the list of judges), this is simply part of their ge= neral news reporting activities.2: Readers may find the 1976 Vallejo cover = a bit risqu=C3=A9. Surprisingly enough, it is true to the text=E2=80=94save= for one detail. Davy is wearing cut-offs. In his time, such tailored trous= ers are a lost technology. Consider how much technology had to be lost for = that to be true.3: A fair fraction of Rediscovery winners enjoyed short liv= es, whether thanks to the lingering (or in the case of Hodgson, immediate) = effects of military careers or to simple bad health.4: Paula Guran has publ= ished=C2=A0two Best-of anthologies that cover both SF and fantasy.
