San Francisco State University, The Department of Sociology and Sexuality
Studies offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track, Assistant
Professor position of Sociology in the area of Urban Inequalities,
beginning August 2019.

We seek a sociologist who specializes in inequality, poverty and mobility,
with specific focus on urban inequalities, urban problems, and city spaces
and neighborhoods. Our preference is for a sociologist who studies
gentrification and displacement, homelessness, spatial inequality, and/or
urban policing. We seek a scholar who employs innovative theoretical or
methodological approaches and who centers the intersections of economic
inequality with race, gender, sexuality, and/or disability. We are
especially interested in a scholar whose work focuses on changing
demographics in California cities, but we will consider candidates
specializing in other large, urban regions. Moreoever, we seek qualified
candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or
service, through diversity, to the excellence of the academic community

The Department of Sociology and Sexuality Studies at SF State is committed
to critical analysis of societies, with particular emphasis on
inequalities, injustices, and processes of social change. Our primary
mission is to provide students with the theoretical and methodological
skills needed to better understand, critique, and contribute to the worlds
in which they live. The sociology major prepares students for a broad range
of career paths, including employment in community-based organizations,
local governments, human service agencies, and research settings. The major
also provides students with a foundation to successfully pursue graduate
work in multiple areas, including sociology, social work, public health,
public administration, counseling, law, sexuality studies, and other
fields. We are also interested in a scholar who could contribute to both
our Sociology BA program and Sexuality Studies MA program.

Responsibilities:

The position requires undergraduate teaching in sociological theory,
advanced research methods, and writing in the discipline. We also seek a
scholar who will mentor and advise undergraduate students and graduate
students in Sexuality Studies, develop and maintain an active research
program, and contribute to ongoing committee and service assignments.

Qualifications:

Required:

•Ph.D. in Sociology from an accredited program. Terminal degree must be
completed by the first day of employment (August 2019).

Preferred:

•Record of teaching contributions in the areas of one or more of the
following: Sociological Theory (Classical and Contemporary); Research
Methods (Quantitative or Qualitative); Sociological Composition
•Emerging and/or active record of scholarship related to urban inequalities
and potential for external funding, if relevant
•Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational
equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works
•Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically
under-represented communities
•Record of contributing to collegial, supportive and collaborative work
environments

Rank and salary:

Assistant Professor. Salary commensurate with qualifications and
experience. The California State University (CSU) provides generous health,
