The Working Group on Culture and War of the Cultural Studies Association
invites submissions for the 17th Annual Meeting of the Cultural Studies
Association (U.S.), at to be held on May 30-June 1, 2019, at Tulane
University, New Orleans, Louisiana.

*General Call*: We invite interdisciplinary papers, panel proposals, and
non-traditional forms of creative intervention that consider the cultural,
economic and political landscape of conflict past and present.
Multi-/international perspectives are especially welcome. Topics may
include, but are not limited to:

·         The militarization/securitization of daily life inside/outside
conflict zones.

·         Cybersecurity, the war on terror, drones.

·         The political economy of conflict: “weaponizing” of financial
institutions, neoliberalism and military privatization/subcontracting, drug
wars, sanctions.

·         Race, gender and sexuality in military organization, including
conscription/recruiting; support, combat and command roles; celebrities in
service.

·         Veterans’ issues: military families; veterans’
policy/history/identity; PTSD treatment, and representation; disabilities.

·         Construction of civilian military/war imaginary in wargaming and
media representation; memorialization.

*Theme Call*: Consonant with this year’s conference theme, the Working
Group also invites papers thematizing “Performance, Politics and Power” in
the context of politics, culture and war. Again, multi-/international
perspectives are especially welcome. Papers/panels could consider:

   - Construction of local solidarities through traditional dance/theater
   events, social media and organized protest.
   - The “performance” of war in video games, and other forms of
   “militainment.”
   - Cathartic representation in poetry and visual arts.

Submissions can be either an individual paper or pre-constituted panel and
are due on Monday, Dec. 3, 2018, through the Cultural Studies Association
website. Please follow the Easy Chair submission guidelines and
instructions found on the CSA Conference Registration page. Note: You do
not have to be a CSA member to submit, but you if your proposal is accepted
you must become a current member and register for the conference.

Travel grants are available for partial reimbursement to graduate and
advanced undergraduate students who present their papers.(
