2019 Cultural Studies Association Annual Conference on “Performance,
Politics, Power”

Tulane University | New Orleans, LA | May 30th to June 1st, 2019





The Working Group on New Media and Digital Cultures invites submissions for
the 17th annual meeting of the Cultural Studies Association (U.S.), to be
held May 30th to June 1st on the campus of Tulane University, New Orleans,
Louisiana. We hope to organize at least two panels this year. The themes of
the panels will be determined after reviewing submitted abstracts.



As an opening question, how does performance manifest in digital culture?
Are there avenues through which the concept of action, or acting, reveals
new political realities, new power relations when these practices are
enacted through new media formats and/or mechanisms? The common enthusiasm
for new modes of communication and new potentials for organizing and
producing new political events is intrinsically tied to the possibilities
of performance possible via new digital formats and modes of interaction.
We seek submissions that address, broadly defined, the application of new
media to modes of engagement and resistance in the current political
sphere. Some possible subjects might include:

·       Marches and other traditional modes of protest and how they are
augmented or hindered via new media.

·       New media as a means of measuring or recording the performance of
political actors or organizations.

·       The contemporary necessity of engaging with new media in the
practice of political organization or participation.

·       New possibilities for political actors connected to the use of or
engagement with new media.

·       Power as enacted through new media and digital culture systems –
how the performance of the self in digital environments enacts a politics
that may or may not manifest in the life world.

·       New media approaches to artistic expression and how the traditional
politics of art might enable, problematize or restrict those approaches.



300 word abstracts should be submitted by 3rd December 2018 to the Cultural
Studies Association website. Please follow the Easy Chair submission
guidelines and instructions found on the CSA
Conference Registration page. All proposals should be submitted through
Easy Chair using the following link:

be a current member to submit. If you proposal is accepted, you must become
a current member of the CSA and register for the conference. These are two
separate transactions.
