Images of Woman - Visual Communication in Advertising

Updated research and on-line resources for students and tutors

Research

I was fortunate to be one of the first PhD students at the Centre for
Contemporary Cultural Studies at Birmingham University back in the late
1960s. My area of study was visual communication in advertising, focusing on
women's magazines. The research was subsequently published as Images of
Woman (by Chatto and Windus 1975). In 2012 I updated my findings for a
presentation at the Conference on Women's Magazines at Kingston University
and recently carried out a further small study.

Website

Extracts from the original study, together with updates from 2012 and 2018
are now on-line, including sections on methodology and galleries containing
many sample advertisements. The website is free to access.

The new site is <http://www.readingpictures.co.uk/>
www.readingpictures.co.uk

If anyone knows of other studies in this area I would be interested to know
of them.
