Lawrence Grossberg and Cultural Studies: Impact and Relevance Today: A Seminar

We would like to hold an OPEN seminar on the work of Lawrence Grossberg and his important contributions to contemporary cultural studies for the 17th Annual Meeting of the Cultural Studies Association, to be held at Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, May 30-June 1, 2019.

Lawrence Grossberg is without doubt one of the most important cultural studies scholars and political intellectuals writing today. One of the leading figures in contemporary cultural studies, both in the US and internationally, Grossberg’s influence extends across the intellectual spectrum of the Left, rocking political and academic worlds with his critical and contextual analyses of popular music and the politics of youth in the United States; the US left and the politics of postmodernism; Trump and Trumpism; and emergent modernities and counter-modernities.

All participants interested in engaging the work and pedagogy of Lawrence Grossberg are welcome, especially those interested in examining how Grossberg’s thought and practice have contributed to the fields of cultural studies and communication studies, both in the US and internationally. However, given the theme of the conference, proposals that connect Gorssberg’s early work on the politics of youth cultures in the United States with his most recent work on the US left and Trumpism in the current political conjuncture will be given priority. Using his major essays and books as foundations, the seminar will examine how Grossberg’s ideas can help us to think through some of the most urgent problems of the contemporary moment. With the rise of Trumpism and white nationalism and the ongoing crises of the state and authority, caused by police violence, mass and racialized incarceration across the United States, as well as concerns and struggles around economic, environmental, social and religious justice across the world, Grossberg’s bold and prescient theorizations of neoliberal modernity and its operations are intensely relevant.

In this volume, Garnet C. Butchart shows how human communication can be understood as embodied relations and not merely as a mechanical process of transmission. Expanding on contemporary philosophies of speech and language, self and other, and community and immunity, this book challenges many common assumptions, constructs, and problems of communication theory while offering compelling new resources for future study.



Human communication has long been characterized as a problem of transmitting information, or the “outward” sharing of “inner thought” through mediated channels of exchange. Butchart questions that model and the various theories to which it gives rise. Drawing from the work of Giorgio Agamben, Roberto Esposito, Jean-Luc Nancy, and Jacques Lacan—thinkers who, along with Martin Heidegger and Michel Foucault, have critiqued the modern notion of a rational subject—Butchart shows that the subject is shaped by language rather than preformed, and that humans embody, and not just use, the signs and contexts of interaction that form what he calls a “communication community.”
