Seeking Panelist: ICQI 2019, Urbana-Champaign Autoethnographies of "Everyday Heteronormative Lives" We have room for one more presenter on an accepted panel (below) at ICQI 2019 in May. If you have an interest in joining us, please send a brief abstract of the paper you propose to Steve Ryder, University of South Florida | Tampa ([email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> ) by Midnight, EST on Friday, Feb 8, 2019. Autoethnographies of "Everyday Heteronormative Lives" In Narrating the Closet, Adams (2011) reminds that "coming out" is not limited by time, place, or context as a singular event but is ongoing: "Coming out is considered an inescapable, ever-present process" (p.106). Thus, against a backdrop of heteronormative assumptions, no one comes out once, to all, for all time, or across all contexts. Subsequently, the joy and/or trauma of crossing the "coming out" threshold to challenge assumptions occurs time and time again. As an event, "coming out" features prominently in the social narrative that non-normative folks construct, participate in, and share. Over the course of one's life, however, to repeatedly "come out" amounts to a process of challenging and redirecting the many mundane or taken-for-granted presumptions of "everyday heteronormative life." Nonetheless, we persist.
