The University of Arizona’s Cultural, and Critical Theory program invites proposals for papers that explore debt and finance in all their forms. We welcome and encourage students and scholars at all career stages and from all disciplines to participate. Our hope is to convene an interdisciplinary space for exploring issues of debt and finance from multiple angles.
Our keynotes include:

  *   Anthony Alvarez, co-author of Credit Where It’s Due: Rethinking Financial Citizenship
  *   Karen Ho, author of Liquidated: An Ethnography of Wall Street
  *   Miranda Joseph, author of Debt to Society: Accounting for Life Under Capitalism
We welcome submissions grappling with a wide variety of topics and questions, including:

  *   How relations of finance and debt are represented in contemporary popular culture.
  *   How representations of debt and finance have shifted since the crisis of 2008.
  *   How debt and risk shape the livelihoods and subjectivities of refugees and migrants.
  *   How financialization is reshaping the role of education in social reproduction and subject formation.
  *   How monetary policy and governmentality work together to produce economic “stability”.
  *   How new forms of payment and cryptocurrencies are reshaping financial practices of individuals, firms and states.
  *   How contemporary and emerging landscapes of finance and debt are connected to processes of dispossession and accumulation.
  *   How has the growing role of credit in social reproduction transformed the terrain of economic citizenship, class struggle and the making of distributional social claims.
  *   How do people understand their debt?
  *   Methodological approaches to studying the spaces of finance and debt.
  *   The relationship between affect and finance
  *   The relationship between finance and justice / punishment.
  *   The relationship between financialization and racial capitalism.
  *   Finance nature and climate change.
  *   As well as many others.
Submission Guidelines
All proposals must be submitted by email to [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> by 11:59 MST on March 31, 2019. Conference organizers will respond by April 7, 2019. Please use the following format for the subject line of your email: “Proposal [Last Name] [First Name]." Please attach a single document in .DOC(X) format with the following information in the order listed below:

  *   Paper title; name; institutional affiliation; email address
  *   Abstract of 250 words (presentation time for papers is 20 minutes maximum)
  *   Two to three-sentence scholarly biography of presenter, with personal pronouns indicated
  *   Request for any audio/visual needs or special accommodations
