Dear Colleagues:
Our department is advertising for a tenure-stream faculty member. This is =
a position that should be of interest to many CULTSTUD subscribers. Apolog=
ies for cross posting.
Job Title: Tenure-Track Faculty Communication Studies
Position Type/Salary: This is a tenure-track faculty appointment in the dep=
artment of Communication, Design, and Culture
Rank and salary are competitive and commensurate with academic preparation =
and experience. An excellent fringe benefits package is included.
Job Summary/Basic Function:
Our department houses a unique interdisciplinary faculty from the fields of=
Communication, Rhetoric, Art History, and Philosophy. We offer students bo=
th a B.A. in Communication Studies and a B.S. in Graphic Design. In 2010, =
we undertook a decade-long (re)visioning process that led us to radically r=
ethink our traditional curriculum. The new B.A. in Communication Studies is=
grounded in the development of core intellectual skills from the Humanitie=
s (critical reasoning, effective writing and speech, and a cultivated dispo=
sition toward seeing human language and behavior as strategic and meaningfu=
l). Upper-division courses encourage student-driven projects that develop,=
synergistically, into unique pathways towards careers in a variety of fiel=

learning, doing, and reflecting. We seek to produce students who are inde=

ilities include involvement with departmental, college-wide, and university=
committees and annual & periodic program level assessment. Also, in accord=
ance with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between the Penn=
sylvania State System of Higher Education and APSCUF, the successful applic=
ant might be assigned to perform work at off-campus sites, in the evening/w=
eekend college and/or provide instruction through distance education.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
While our curriculum allows for students to make connections among many fie=
lds of inquiry into human language and behavior, we are especially keen to =
hire someone who can enrich our current offerings to students in relation t=
o message design and production. We are particularly interested in talking=
to candidates with substantial backgrounds in new media, digital communica=
tion, multi-platform promotions, advertising, and Public Relations.
In order to be a leading applicant in this search, in addition to the afore=
mentioned requirements, the applicant minimally must be fluent in the Engli=
sh language, be able to communicate well, demonstrate outstanding potential=
for excellence in teaching through a successful interview and/or classroom=
demonstration and be experienced in the use of innovative curricular appro=
aches that are student-centered, inquiry-based, and hands-on oriented.
Minimum of Education and Training:
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Communication Studies or a terminal degree =
in a related field upon employment
