AMSA 2020: "Masculinities in Transition"
University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colorado
The University of Northern Colorado recognizes that UNC occupies the land o=
f the Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapaho peoples. Further, we acknowledge that 48 t=
ribes have historic ties to the space that now claims the state of Colorado=
.
DATES: March 19-22, 2020
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: DEC 1st, 2019
The 2020 Sam Femiano Lecture in Men's Studies to be given by Dr. Miriam Abe=
lson
Miriam J. Abelson is Associate Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality St=
udies at Portland State University. Her research focuses on masculinities, =
transgender studies, LGBT youth, rural and urban studies, and intersectiona=
l approaches to race, sexuality, and gender. She has published on topics in=
cluding, masculinities and violence, trans feminism, and intersectionality =
and gendered fear. Her book, Men in Place: Trans Masculinity, Race, and Sex=
uality in America (2019), demonstrates through a large and geographically d=
iverse interview study with transgender men that contemporary U.S. masculin=
ity is deeply embedded in the spaces and places men move in their everyday =
lives and is inseparable from race and sexuality.
Dr. William David Foster 2020 Conference Scholar-in Residence to deliver pl=
enary address
David William Foster is a Regents Professor of Spanish and women and gender=
 studies at Arizona State University. He has written extensively on Argenti=
ne narrative and theater, and he has held Fulbright teaching appointments i=
n Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. He has also served as an Inter-American D=
evelopment Bank professor in Chile. Foster has held visiting appointments a=
t Fresno State College, Vanderbilt University, University of California-Los=
 Angeles, University of California-Riverside, and Florida International Uni=
versity. He has conducted six seminars for teachers under the auspices of t=
he National Endowment for the Humanities, the most recent in Sao Paulo in s=
ummer 2013. In 2010, Foster was honored for his lifetime work on Argentine =
culture by the Centro de Narratoloia at a program held at the Argentine Nat=
ional Library. He is past president of the Latin American Jewish Studies As=
sociation.
Call for Papers: Masculinities in Transition
The 2020 AMSA conference will focus on transitions. In the context of schol=
arship on men and masculinities, "transition" can mean many things. We may =
ask how critical studies of men and masculinities are changing, how discour=
se around men and masculinities are changing, how men's lives are changing,=
 or even how AMSA itself is changing - to name only a few of the directions=
 that "transition" may take us in. "Transition" also carries specific conno=
tations in relationship to transgender people, Trans Studies, and Queer Stu=
dies. In hosting this meeting, we invite and embrace all of these various m=
eanings. While we welcome proposals that address "transitions" in any relat=
ionship to men and masculinities, we especially encourage proposals that ad=
dress the following themes:

* Transitions in men's lives - including, but not limited to, trans=
itions in health, economics, politics, migration/citizenship status, and ag=
ing

* Transitions in discourse around men and/or masculinities

* Trans and queer men and masculinities

* Efforts to encourage various forms of transition - including, but=
 not limited to, social and political movements, non-profit and NGO program=
ming, education, and therapeutic or medical efforts.

While we strongly encourage submissions on the themes of the conference, th=
ere will also be sessions dedicated to broader topics related to the critic=
al study of men and masculinities. Please feel free to submit abstracts tha=
t fit the broader remit of AMSA. We welcome contributions from all discipli=
nes and traditions across the globe.
PAPERS, PANELS, POSTERS & ARTWORK
Individual paper and poster abstracts should be 250-300 words and include 4=
-6 clearly indicated keywords. Proposals for a full panel must include a 25=
0-word abstract of the panel, and 150-word abstracts of all papers proposed=
. Abstracts must be submitted by December 1, 2019. Those who submit paper=
, poster, and panel proposals will be notified of the status of their submi=
ssion by January 15, 2020. If your paper is not accepted, you may be offere=
d the opportunity to present as a poster instead.
PRECONFERENCE AND CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS
As in previous years, we welcome productive and engaging workshops that com=
plement this year's theme or the broader themes of AMSA. In particular, we =
are looking to include workshops that center on professionalization that wi=
ll assist students and scholars with their future careers in and outside of=
 academia. Those proposing workshops can either apply for three-hour pre-co=
nference workshops or one and half hour conference workshops.
Workshops might include:

*         Publishing in Academia

* Writing in Academia and for other audiences

*         Interdisciplinary writing and research

*         Academic career development

*         Alternative Academic Careers (Alt-Ac)

*         Teaching and postgraduate supervision

* Grant writing and project development

* Working with communities, and community and industry partners

*         Networking and collaboration

*         Working with the media

Workshop abstract summaries must be 500 words, with an additional breakdown=
 that outlines what the workshop will cover, and three bullet points that i=
llustrate what participants will learn and takeaway from attending this wor=
kshop. Additionally, we welcome workshops that deal with the themes listed=
 in the call for papers and posters. We ask that workshop organizers keep i=
n mind the interdisciplinary audience of AMSA. Workshop abstract summaries =
and outlines must be submitted by December 1, 2019. Those who submit worksh=
op proposals will be notified of the status of their submission by January =
15, 2019.

Submit your proposals at https://forms.gle/FzpT1MwTmL9iDEMK9. There will be=
 a call for applications for the Loren Frankel Scholarship<https://mensstud=
ies.org/?page_id=3D7> to follow. Please consult the AMSA website for furthe=
r details.

All individuals invited to present must register for the conference no late=
r than February 15, 2020. Failure to do so will result in removal from the =
conference program.
