The ESP Working Group welcomes proposals from scholars from any discipline, inter-discipline, or scholarly field. As in the CSA more broadly, the ESP Working Group aims to provide multiple and diverse spaces for the cross-pollination of art, activism, pedagogy, design, and research by bringing together participants from a variety of positions inside and outside the university. Therefore, while we welcome traditional academic papers, we also encourage contributions that experiment with alternative formats and intervene in the traditional disciplinary formations and exclusionary conceptions and practices of the academy. Especially in light of the working group=E2=80=99s focus on work that links academic and creati= ve projects with environmental and social justice concerns, we are particularly interested in proposals designed to document and advance existing forms of collective action or catalyze new collaborations. We encourage submissions from individuals working beyond the boundaries of the university: artists, activists, independent scholars, professionals, community organizers, and community college educators. The ESP is putting out two calls for papers/panelists for the 2020 Conference. Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be submitted via EasyChair by *9 December 2019*. By *January 17, 2020*, ESP organizers will place individual proposals submitted to the general or themed call into sessions, as appropriate, and will notify potential panelists of decisions. *1) **General Call for Papers/Panelists* The ESP invites proposals for individual papers that put the Working Group=E2=80=99s central concerns in conversation with the 2020 conference t= heme of Bodily Sovereignty and Collective Action. The ESP invites submissions that interrogate, challenge, question or otherwise explicate the spatial dimensions of sovereignty. We welcome contributions from academics, artists, and activists who are asking how and when sovereign spaces are made and unmade, in diverse historical, geographic, and political contexts. For this call, we interpret the CSA=E2=80=99s 2020 theme, =E2=80=9CBodily S= overeignty and Collective Action,=E2=80=9D broadly, to consider the ways that human and no= nhuman actors understand, intervene in, and transform space through claims to and against sovereignty. Scholars have investigated theories of sovereignty and space through a number of critical traditions. For example, Foucault=E2=80=99s theories of disciplinary and biopolitical power have been effective rubrics for inquiries into spatiality, while Agamben=E2=80=99s biopolitical project is = centered on sovereignty and place. Hardt and Negri argue that disciplinary interventions onto the landscape frame power=E2=80=99s scale of influence t= hat extends through the consciousness of the population. Current discussions around sovereignty expand long-standing critiques in Marxist geography about the spatial dimensions of capitalist accumulation. Debates around enclosure and the commons, for example, have recently found new critical purchase in the contemporary context of global political projects, like Israeli efforts to deprive Palestinians of their lands (Fields 2017), and capitalist dispossession of the commons (Harvey 2004). At the same time, new discourses around spatial and ecological dimensions of racial capitalism lend urgency to current challenges to sovereignty (Tuck & Yang 2012; Davis et al. 2019). Geography, in particular, has renewed attention towards spatial dimensions of claims to and regulation of sovereignty. Abolition geographers like Ruth Wilson Gilmore and Nik Heynen, among others, have posed incisive critiques of the carceral state, which has come to inform broader discussions around the built environment and challenges to sovereignty. In this session, we aim to build on these discussions from a cultural studies perspective attentive to the spatial dimensions of sovereignty.
