Hi Everyone,

I know that during our recent business meeting's discussion of the listserv
question, Karla expressed reservations about H-Net as a possible
replacement, and those reservations should not be discounted. But I think
it would be worthwhile for SHERA members to consider together what joining
H-Net would offer to our group before ruling it out. I want to send you a
couple of links to give you a sense of the possibilities, especially since
H-ArtHist has not been migrated into the H-Net Commons
<http://networks.h-net.org>, and so many of you may not know much about the
Commons itself.

1) Each network (formerly listserv) in H-Net has its own site within the
H-Net Commons. So for example, H-Nationalism
<https://networks.h-net.org/h-nationalism> has a front page that organizes
the group's discussions, blogs, reviews, etc. In the side menu under
H-Nationalism Resources, you can see some of the projects that the network
has put together. For example, there is a series of invited essays on the
topic of Secessionism and Separatism
<https://networks.h-net.org/node/3911/pages/103983/secessionism-and-separatism-monthly>
that the network commissioned and subscribers subsequently discussed. Each
time an item was posted to the network, subscribers received a notification
in their email in-boxes, much like in listserv, but they could also click
and see the post on the site itself.

2) Each network has the capability to host discussions, upload news and
information, create syllabus databases, commission and edit scholarly book
and exhibition reviews, image galleries, blogs, etc. SHERA member Hanna
Chuchvaha has been commissioning and editing reviews for H-Russia. You can
check out several of our members' books reviewed there
<https://networks.h-net.org/node/10000/reviews>. The real benefit here is
that subscribers can upload items themselves. Instead of having the web
news editor scour the field for news items or waiting for a programmer to
update our website, SHERA members can submit their own news very easily,
and the network editors just need to add the appropriate tags to organize
it in the right place on the site. (I am one of the editors of the H-Podcast
<https://networks.h-net.org/h-podcast> network, and you can see how I've
organized its front page to filter discussions, essays, resources & tips,
and individual podcast episodes into different feeds.)

3) Networks rely on volunteer editors and advisory board members to
moderate posts, resolve disputes on the network, and most importantly,
decide what network subscribers might like to see on the network. Editors
can focus as narrowly or as broadly as they like. So, for example, a SHERA
member who has invested energy into thinking about pedagogy in our field
could put a call for syllabi or compile other kinds of teaching resources.
(Here, for example, are H-German
<https://networks.h-net.org/node/35008/projecttype/teaching-resources>'s
and H-Urban
<https://networks.h-net.org/node/22277/pages/40066/h-urban-teaching-center>'s
teaching centers.) Someone who visits and takes pictures at exhibitions
could upload those images into a gallery that members could make use of in
teaching and research. Someone else could compile a crowd-sourced list of
professional opportunities, like MA/PhD courses, summer internships, etc.
Since I spend a lot of my day working on H-Net, I would be happy to serve
as an editor on such a network with anyone else who might wish to get
involved. There is no maximum for the number of editors or advisory board
members a network can have.

4) On the subject of discussions, there is one drawback, which is that you
cannot post or reply out of email. Instead, users go to the network front
page and post there. (Or click Reply out of their email, which takes them
to the site.) This is the one thing that users consistently mention, and
it's something that H-Net would like to fix when we upgrade the platform,
but it's an expensive upgrade, and still several years off. In the
meanwhile, perhaps SHERA members could take a look at the existing platform
for themselves and think about whether it's something that could be a good
replacement to our current listserv. If you are interested, I would urge
you to go to https://networks.h-net.org and create an account by clicking
Sign Up in the top right. Once logged in, you can subscribe to your
networks of interest, like H-Russia <http://networks.h-net.org/h-russia>,
H-Soyuz <https://networks.h-net.org/h-soyuz>, Habsburg
<https://networks.h-net.org/habsburg>, or others from the All Networks list
<https://networks.h-net.org/networks>. See what the email notifications are
like, and post and see how that works.

If SHERA members decide that what you really want is listserv, I won't be
offended. But it seems like we could do more to consolidate our resources,
including our steady stream of news and announcements, and make them more
easily available to each other and to those in our field who may be looking
for them.
