Important changes regarding SHERA communication platform

In light of a persuasive listserv posting by Yelena Kalinsky yesterday, the SHERA board agreed by a majority of votes to recommend highly the H-NET platform as the basis for our communications starting with the election of new officers in January. The arguments in favor of this position were outlined in Yelena's email. In a nutshell, they are: 1) ease and versatility of organization, allowing us to set up a variety of blogs, discussions, reviews, databases; 2) security of archiving past discussions (unlike Google, which is sometimes unreliable in terms of maintaining its groups' archives, H-NET is non-profit and committed to archiving); 3) ease of posting -- subscribers can upload their posting themselves (editors just help tag them in order to organize them accordingly on the website). 4) Notifications of postings will be coming to all subscribers=E2=80=99 email addresses -- and here comes one drawback of the H-NET platform: subscribers cannot just hit a reply button to respond to the posting directly, but have to log into the H-NET website to post their response. Tamara Jhashi, our one and only listserv coordinator, supports the switching of the platform to H-NET. To quote Tamara: "I think that H-Net is the best solution for SHERA. It will bring communications into an excellent platform that has many more options and possibilities for various kinds of materials to be accessible. A listserv is old-fashioned, clumsy, and very limited in what it can do. It's also somewhat time-consuming to maintain as about 80% of my time is spent filtering out ads selling everything under the sun or appeals from people claiming to have millions of dollars in obscure Nigerian banks. Not to mention filtering out bogus email addresses requesting subscription -- this happens several times a day." It would still be possible to maintain a traditional list under Google Groups (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Groups). It will be free, but its disadvantage is that it will double the work for the officers who will need to post announcements on two different platforms. In addition, as mentioned above, Google has shown itself unreliable in maintaining its groups' archives, sometimes closing them haphazardly. If we want to preserve the archive, H-NET is the way to go. One of the arguments in favor of maintaining the listserv was that a network platform tends to fizzle out the discussion aspect of the group. However, as Yelena pointed out, "it does seem like the discussion aspect of the listserv is mostly nonexistent on SHERA already (we don't have the kind of long discussions that, for example, you see on SEELANGS or CAAH, so there's really nothing to kill). Instead, people mostly post information, calls for papers, exhibitions, etc., and that can actually be more visually accessible if we use an H-Net platform to tag things and create feeds." SHERA membership will have to vote on choosing the communication platform. Depending on your comments and responses, the ballot will include 2 options: 1- acceptance of the H-NET platform as SHERA's communication base; 2- acceptance of the Google Groups e-mail base in addition to the H-NET platform as SHERA communication base. In both cases, we will need to change the functions of the Web News Editor and the Listserv Coordinator to those of two H-NET editors, because we will need them to run the network.
