Dear Friends, A colleague is interested in finding paintings or other 2D media from any era of Russian and Eastern European history that that show the backs of paintings, whether in an artist's studio (like Velazquez's Las Meninas), leaning against walls (as in Chardin's The Young Draughtsman) or in any other realistic or imaginary form. He is particularly interest in paintings of backs of paintings that aspire to history paintings (e.g. the Polish artist Jacek Malczewski's Painter's Inspiration, 1897). He would be still more grateful for suggestions that contain sources for such images. If you have any suggestions, please send them directly to Richard Read at the following address: [email protected] Best regards, Erika -- Dr. Erika Wolf Lecturer Art History & Theory Programme Department of History University of Otago P.O.
