The Getty Postdoctoral Fellowships in 2005-2006 for scholars of art history

Postdoctoral Fellowships provide support for outstanding scholars in the
early stages of their careers, allowing them the flexibility to travel and
study wherever necessary to undertake their work.

Grants support interpretive research projects that make a substantial and
original contribution to the understanding of art and its history.

Eligibility

The Postdoctoral Fellowships in 2005-2006 are designed for scholars of all
nationalities whose doctoral degrees in art history (or the equivalent in
countries outside the United States) have been or will be officially
conferred between January 1, 1999, and January 1, 2005. (Please note that
having submitted or defended one's dissertation within this time frame is
not sufficient to qualify for eligibility if the degree has not been
officially conferred.)

Candidates who hold doctoral degrees in fields outside art history are
eligible to apply if they can demonstrate that their work promises to make a
substantial and original contribution to the understanding of art and its
history.

Applications for the development of basic research tools, such as computer
databases or art-historical reference works, are not eligible in this
category.


Terms
Fellowships provide a $40,000 stipend for a twelve-month period.

Fellows have the flexibility to pursue their research wherever necessary to
complete their projects. Although grantees are welcome to use the Research
Library at the Getty Research Institute if their projects bring them to Los
Angeles, the fellowships are nonresidential.

During the tenure of the fellowship, fellows may not accept other awards or
grants, nor may they undertake any form of employment. These awards may not
be deferred and they are not renewable.


Application Deadline
Completed application materials must be received in the Grant Program office
on or before November 1, 2004. We regret that incomplete or late
applications (those received after November 1, 2004, regardless of their
postmark date or place of origin) cannot be accepted for consideration.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications hand-delivered to the Getty
Center or sent by e-mail or fax. Application material cannot be returned.


Notification
Applicants will be notified of the Grant Program's decision in March 2005.


Review Process
A maximum of fifteen fellowships will be awarded through an open competition
administered by the Getty Grant Program. Eligible applications are reviewed
by scholars in relevant fields and are judged on the basis of the following:


the quality and originality of the proposed project;
the project's methodology;
the contribution of the project to its specialized field and its broader
contribution; and the qualifications of the candidate to undertake the
project.
