Poetry Reading under RACC LITERARY SERIES

Samuel Menashe's most recent collections of poems are New and Selected Poems
(Library of America, 2005) and an expanded edition of the same book, New and
Selected Poems (Bloodaxe Books, 2008). He was born in New York City to
Russian-Jewish immigrants and lives in New York City to this day. A recent

Ilya Bernstein is the author of one collection of poems, Attention and Man,
and the editor of Osip Mandelstam: New Translations (both published by Ugly
Duckling Presse). He was born in Moscow, came to the United States as a
child, and lives in New York City.

 

Some fall in love, while others fall in with love

And become its companions on a road

That has no destination.

What kind of company do they keep?

They keep the company of love 

In a fellowship of wayfarers. They follow love 

In sufferance of the consequences of love.

They tell themselves: "My heart 

Has done an unheard-of thing:

It has gone ahead and fallen in with love.

My heart has done an undreamt-of thing:

Set against the backdrop of Stalinist ethnic deportations and political
purges, THE GIFT TO STALIN describes the story of a Jewish boy, saved by
Kasym, a Kazakh railroad worker. Young Sashka escapes the train that deports
people who are undesirable to the Soviet Regime to à desolate Eastern
republic. Having lost his grandfather on the way, he has to hide among the
dead upon arrival. Kasym discovers the weakened boy and risks his life
several times: first to save Sashka from death and then to shelter him in a
local village, inhabited by political prisoners from all over Soviet Union
and new communist states.

They seem safe on the Kazakh steppes, where the nomad spirit of hospitality
rules, but eventually the hand of Stalin and his reign of fear reach even
this far outpost of the Soviet empire. Children are preparing gifts for
Stalin’s 70th birthday, and Sashka prepares his, as he believes it will help
return his parents. But there is a much larger gift, for which no one is
prepared!
